d40's a good intro body... but i think you should just go d50 or better. less limitations.

mm.. well one thing i can say is that after you define your subject, try the shot in different angles. dont be afraid to snap 10-20 pics or more of the subject.

don't have it but i suggest ppl use this site to check before purchasing on a newly found website that has deals that seem too good to be true.

http://www.resellerratings.com/ (use the store ratings option)

I'm interested in buying a DSLR for the first time, and I'm having difficulty choosing one. I don't really have that much experience in photography, but I'm heading off for college soon and I plan on learning it there. I don't need anything that's too high up there, but I would like a camera that will last me for awhile and help me learn/experiment. I do prefer Canon cameras, so if you camera buffs could help me choose a Canon DSLR for a beginner, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance!

for canon, it actually boils down to two choices...
the xti or the 30D
xti is small and lightweight and easier to carry around
the 30D is better built and ergonomics
if you're on a budget and dont mind the size of the xti, get the xti.
if you have the money, i think the 30D is worth the cost.
in terms of lenses, i highly suggest either getting the kit lens bundled with the body,
or just buying the kit lens used. use it for a little while, and then buy one that you REALLY want.
this way you have a better idea of what you need before you invest a whole lot of money on a lens.
the 50/1.8 is nice to keep around though... so if you want a fast prime, it's the cheapest option that offers decent quality.

blah I think i've narrowed down my next lens.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
or
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

still can't decide sad.gif the 24-105 does have IS!

Funny that Sigma has a 24-70mm f/2.8 for 400 bucks......

i had that same dilemma, but i went the 24-105/4 IS. i do have to say there were a lot of times when i wish i had the 2.8 when taking a few action shots, but overall, i dont regret my decision. i take a lot of journalism / portrait style photography, so the extra speed was not as necessary as the longer reach and IS. plus, i have the 50 & 85/1.8 primes to cover for me when i really need it.

if you're on the budget, the sigma takes some decent pictures, and it's built fairly well. i might buy this lens if i feel i need a faster lens to complement my 24-105.

You should have sold it to me... ;_;
Anyway there IS the San Diego Zoo right near where I am... Maybe I should go XP

Oh also~ Can anyone recommend me a good wide angle lens? I really want one (I'm not getting one in the near future since I just spent a grand on this lens but still... At least I can have a goal +_+)

By the way Canon has an instant rebate on some of its popular lenses so you guys should check it out... But it ends on the 16th so hurry!

Yeah but the fact that it's only compatible with 20D, 30D and Digital Rebels kind of deters me from it... I'm actually hoping to upgrade my body in the future and then I won't be able to use this lens sad.gif

sell it then and buy a new one then lol

that 10-22 is the only 'ultra wide' lens on a 20d/30d/etc
the 16-35/17-40 is just not wide enough imo

^I thought it's really bad for your sensor if you take a picture of the sun directly... No?
