Thanks for the suggestions.
I'd stick to actually having the money to afford it rather than taking out a loan. I don't want to fall in that percentage of people who are in debt. I'm not a fan of Canons and I don't understand why people like them so much, but I have always prefer Nikon. The pictures that are taken by Nikon cameras appear better in my opinion compare to pictures that are taken by Canon cameras.
I took a black and white film photography class last year and I learned quite a lot. As for right now, I'm not taking any classes, but I occasionally use my friend's Nikon D70 to learn more about DSLR.

nikon's great. with the new camera bodies out, it gives you some more incentive to go nikon, even if you dont get those. they've got a great lens lineup and flash photography with nikon is unmatched. but when it comes to primes and telephoto, nikon still falls behind canons. and though im not sure about the new nikon bodies yet, canon still consistently outperforms nikon in noise. that's potentially an extra stop of light you can gain. nikon tends to have a better light meter than canon and calculates exposure just a tad bit better. but being a dslr/slr user, this shouldn't be much of an issue! it's got controls on it for a reason! hehe
get a d50/d70 if you want to go nikon. i dont see why not?
ps. $600~$700 of debt is not really much... you should see what my friend's are paying from college/car loans!!! hehehe... heck, one of them pays that much per month for her car!!

Yeah, Canon has less noise when it comes to night shots, but I don't think I'll be taking that many night photos. I guess we have different uses for the cameras. But I'm loving the Nikon's body a lot more. It's more rugged and seem more durable compare to Canon's plastic-feel-body.
I was thinking of those two, but I prefer what the D40 has to offer and especially the price.
Wow, your friends must be owing mad money. I definitely don't want to ow more than $500 because I don't make that much money even though I work a lot. $500 is already a lot to me even though it doesn't sound a lot to everyone else, but I'd rather not be in debt and owe money left and right. And you don't want to mess up your credit score at this age.

It's just one of those hobbies where that 'next upgrade' keeps calling out to you constantly
Man... to be able to afford L glass... *sigh*

once you get your first L, there's no turning back...
there will be few lenses you will look at and consider buying after an L , especially when it comes to primes...

I don't even have a full kit yet. I'm sure once I get a set of lens that covers all the necessary focal ranges then I'll start with replacing them one-by-one with L's

unless u need those focal ranges immediately, might as well start with an L. and upgrade your L glass accordingly

I do admit, that after the 10-22 my next item on the list is a short tele and that 70-200 f/2.8 L IS looks insanely tempting
First though, got to brush up my photography skills. I've become rusty since I dropped the hobby in the film days LOL The pictures I've taken lately, no amount of L glass would save.

i upgraded from the 70-200/4 L to the 70-200/2.8 IS. what i did was buy during rebate period as well as look for special deals from different shops. i bought it as low as possible, and sold during a non-rebate period. i was able to sell my lens at the price i bought it! i only paid for shipping. hehe
the 10-22 is a nice lens. i'd get that too if i used it enough... i think i'll just settle for borrowing a friend's copy from time to time. i know he'll be using my 7-2 IS once in a while.

I'm also excited about the new D3.. not so much for myself but for Nikon. I think they've given Canon something to really worry about for the next gen bodies. I doubt I'll go buy a copy though.. but maybe when the D3xs or D4 comes out eventually. But yea, lens far outweigh bodies for me when it comes to purchasing decisions. I think I realized that the most when I sold my D2xs and downgraded for a D200 and I still got the same if not better quality of shots.
