BTW, I was out shooting a couple days ago, and this lady asked why I still shot with film. I showed her the back of my XT. She replied saying something like, wow, an LCD. Must come in handy when shooting film.
I also usually get the, "turn off the shutter sound!" comment.

upgrading? i'm assuming the only upgrade you will get is the 5D. the 40D is not worth it IMO considering you're using a camera that's been out less than a year. plus, you wanted FF anyways. if your dad offers to buy you that 40D, ask him if he could hang on a little longer and get you the 5D instead.
also... the 24-105/4 L is my most used lens. build is superb and focuses fast and accurately even in low light. images pop and come out quite sharp as well. however, due to it being f4, it's not a very good lens for low light when your subjects are moving, unless that's the effect you were going for. and also, the bokeh is not as good as the 24-70/2.8L or most of the other L zooms for that matter. but it's still hands down the best walkaround lens i've ever used, and for what it provides along with the convenience factor is what really pays off for me in the end.
for this reason, i'm starting to slowly accumulate a set of primes to fill in the 24-105mm range for low light shooting + bokeh. i got the 30/1.4 sigma and the 85/1.8 canon. still debating about the 50mm. might just get the 1.8, but the USM/speed/IQ of the 50/1.4 is just too tempting! the 70-200/2.8 IS L should cover for me nicely in low light for longer ranges, so i think im pretty set there. maybe just get a 1.4x extender for longer range, and i doubt i'll need that kind of speed/FL combination often enough to warrant getting the 300/2.8 (which i would rather put down on a nice car instead.. lol)

Aren't some people funny with their lack of knowledge? Maybe you get comments like that cuz it looks like you don't know what you're doing? Hahah, jk, jk
Seeing all the recent posts, I'm guessing soompi is more of a Canon crowd?

My dad got it for me with the camera instead of a kit lens.
It's nice but the build/bokeh is kind of bleh...
I think it's worth around $500 new?;

What do you mean by "USM pictures"? USM is ultrasonic motor which helps the lens to autofocus faster so it's not really a "method" but a technology... Or maybe you're talking about a different USM and I just totally misunderstood you >_<;;
Anyway I'm hoping to sell my Canon EF-S 60mm Macro USM lens for $300 so if anybody's interested, PM me please >_< (original price is almost $400 and I bought a lens hood made specific for the lens by Canon)

I think maybe UnSharpMask in Photoshop. That's what I got from reading the context of his post.

these are the sttins he says that hes found to work wonders using USM
(1) For people: Amount 150%, Radius 1, Threshold 10
(2) For cityscapes, urban photography, or travel: Amount 65%, Radius 3, Threshold 2
(3) For general everyday use: Amount 85%, Radius 1, Threshold 4
and of course you adjust accordingly, these settings dont always look the best with your photos.
Theres also another technique he states in the book but its kinda long to type up, so i might jsut scan the pages in so you can read it.

less sharpening is required for web use, while more is required when printing the image from different formats of printers
anyways, i just came home from a 14 hours day shooting/assisting a celebrity wedding!
it was one AWESOME and CRAZY day
would like to tell more about it, but i think i really need to get some sleep now
