Hey!!!
it's pretty typical in asian families for the parents to force their children into becoming doctors or dentists ...

r n e of you guys just doing a course because your parents think it's the best for you??

i know that i am tears.gif ... i want to do performing arts stuff ... i have to do something more 'normal' and i'm doing business now ... don't you find that annoying?? n e one in the same boat?? i'm going to finish my degree quickly then do perf. stuff ^__^

i study for myself. unlike most korean parents they didn't expect a lot from me (me being the youngest in the family). when i dropped out of HS after my first year, it was me who chose to go back to school after 4 years and take my GED/SAT and get into college. but it's not all for me though.. i want to make my family proud smile.gif

a lot of people at my school *do* go into pre-med and pre-law b/c of their parents but you have to understand that most of them are super competitive in their own right and are willing to do whatever it takes to "succeed" in life.

I used to study for my parents. My father wanted me to be an electrical engineer. I did well but I decided it wasn't for me. My mother kinda forced me in the direction of pharmacy, but again, it wasn't for me. I ended up choosing to do what I wanted to do, namely East Asian History with a minor in Asian studies. I think my grandparents were the only ones happy with my decision. It's not about making just your family proud - I gotta be happy too. heh heh.

It's my last semester and all is well. I'll hopefully get the job I want (for now), so all I can do is cross my fingers.

im in film which my parents werent too happy with
tho after awhile they got hopeful that i would go into documentaries
my parents are big on social work

and when they found out i wanted to go into korean entertainment they were worried for me..because we all know how competive it is...
but my parents want me to do something that i love so they're supportive

they said all they want is that i get a job where i can support myself, be happy with what im doing, and work hard to be successful in whatever area its in

No. I study for myself. If I was studying for myself, probably I could've taken Accountancy.. I'm taking International Studies right now and have plans on my own.. But my dad actually wants me to be a lawyer (my parents are both accountant. but my dad works in politics so he know all those stuff about my course..) and I didn't think I'd actually think of being one.. but after my Undergrad.. I'm considering of taking up Law.

Well, I'm still a freshman but I'm pretty sure I can finish the course without regrets because I'm starting to like the content of it. ^^

In your case, the piece of advice I can give, is to follow your parents first. You probably don't know that in that field, you will be better than on the course you want to take up... But if all else fails, maybe you can talk to them about shiftin courses. happy.gif; Good luck.

In the beginning
I didn't care what my dad would say about my Visual Arts major..
When I painted, when I drew, when I took pics, that was when i was the most happiest.
My mom was the only supportive one with my decision...
My dad...
He was sooooo AGAINST it omg..
He wudnt look at me and talk to me..... this decision, i was even afraid it wud cost my parent's their marraige.. this went on for a while
and i couldnt take it anymore and i just changed my major to accounting.

sheesh.

no because my parents wouldn't force me to do these kinds of things. They would support me even if I didn't choose to go to college. I just decided I wanted to experience the whole college life and being independent. My parents don't really care about what I become as long as I'm happy doing my job.

yeah i want to enter the entertainment industry ... and the hard thing is that age really matters ... they want you as young as possible ....

i think i'll chagne though ... i know business is maybe 60-70% right for me ... but i can't see me doing it in the future!!!

for those whoes parents support u ... very lucky!!!!!!!!!!!

but i'm doing dancin' stuff as extra cirric. to keep it up!!

hopefully those who r currently studying for their parents will do what you really want to do - as a side (for now)

I never studied for my parents, in the sense of entering a field they made me. I did, and do, however, study for my parents by studying something I enjoy and doing well with it.

My parents never expected that I do pre-med; I did it out of my own choice. Changing to major in art & design as also my own choice and they're fully supportive and encouraging of it as long as it's what makes me happy.

nope..I study for myself..although there's some pressure from my aunts and uncles to be somewhere in the med field other than music which I am in. But still I'm in music no matter what. my parents fully support what I do because I love it.

my parents are totally supportive of what i want to do. i mean...i got into berkeley and ucla but i turned them down to go to a lesser known school to study hotel management. and my parents were supportive of my decision. they actually encouraged it.

then you might grow hateful....

tell your parents what you really want to do.

my parents know that i want to performing arts too...
but i also want to get my degree... so its half them and half me.

but ive always told my parents that going to college to is not for them. entirely.
i want to graduate but i also want to do what i want to do, and where i want to go.
they know how i am cause i tell them what i really want.

i always put my happiness before others.
if im not happy... i cause others to feel the bad vibe and its not good to pass sad vibes.

but... dont put yourself in that.

if you dont have the passion.
you will in the end feel like a waste.

be happy.
go with your passion.

Do what you want to do. =)
And what makes you happy.
Tell your parents about it. They'll understand. Or do some research on your career and give them the statistics of salary wages. They just want you to be happy and not to become burden or suffer with no/less money at all.

They are totally supportive of what I wanted to do. I always wanted to become a doctor--specifically in the world health organization. They are happy that I'm majoring in biology/pre-med (though pre-med isn't really a major). But, my parents and family members constantly ask me, "Are you sure you want to do this?" "Make sure you do something that you're happy with."
" Don't let anyone tell you the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon "

at first I wanted to do pre-med
then my parents talked me out of it
now that I'm doing pre-pharm
they're pressuring me to do pre-med again

... we'll see

Grr why did they have to invent the geek squad before mee...
