I can't get myself to do Turbo Jam anymore =( I did it for a good month and toned up well, but I've stopped doing it and it's really really hard to get back on it. The 40 min. Carido Party is CRAZY..I don't know how I stayed with that program for long. It's not fun anymore, and I hate the music. I'm not overweight and what I need is toning. I've never joined a gym before, but am thinking about joining 24 or LA. Maybe the environment there will keep me motivated? I think I'll hit the gym often since I'm paying for it..my other choice is to just run outside with my ipod. is running a mile couple days a week enough to keep me toned? I think it wouod be a waste of money to get a gym membership when I can just run outside, but I'm not sure if running would be enough and it's sometimes hard to get out the door to run outside...what do you guys think?

well the good side about getting a gym membership is that they have various classes from kickboxing class to toning your body with different instructors so you won't get bored.

I don't think cardio alone won't make your body toned. *shrugs*

i prefer the gym. running outside has too many hassels like avoiding cars, other runners, bikers, kids, etc... i get irritated easily with those things and it makes me want to stop. also i dont want to get tanned so indoors gym is best imo. i had a membership to 24 for a while and they are not as clean as other places but since im a night person, their hours really fit my schedule well

A gym membership is ONLY worth it if you actually go to the gym. A lot of people get expensive gym memberships and go like every 2 weeks which is a BIG waste of money. First of all memberships are expensive since they make you sign a contract and for those who've tried to cancel one knows that it's next to impossible (or a big stress ball). Most of the commercials where you hear $30 a month it's all a trick. There's a bunch of hidden fees + 2 year contracts or whatever. If you just want to run, then run outside. I personally find it more energizing to run outside in nature (or go hiking). If you want to build muscles like Arnold, then a gym is probably better but I'm guessing you just want to tone and lose weight. Run.. Go to your local high school and jog, or jog around your neighborhood. If you really do want to go to a gym setting, try your local YMCA.

Oh yeah like the person mentioned, gyms do have an advantage since they offer classes that you can attend. But I find that most people go to a class and stop. If you want to go to classes, get a free trial week and see if the classes are worth it. (or you can go to your local community college or community center and find classes for cheap)

the gym membership is really and truly worth it if you go to the classes & stuff...if not, running outside is much better.

running outside is not only better for your health, but it is so much more beneficial to work out outside rather than a treadmill/eliptical

Why not buy a few free weights and research for a variety of exercises?

i'd rather exercise/run outside because of fresh air... something about it being outside makes you run for a longer time. imo. cause at lacrosse practice i always run further distances and have more stamina, but when i go to the gym and run on the treadmill its just not the same.

some people mentioned taking classes...well you dont need a membership to take classes at the gyms. at least most gyms i know of. just need to sign up for the class smile.gif
ive pondered this question many times sad.gif you should try to jog around first. if you really cant stand the cars...etc, then get a membership

working out on your own. don't just simply run outside. buy some two lbs barbels and just carry them with you when you walk, jog, or run. use them to do some aerobics (you can catch this on tv or any websites). the gym's only worth the money if you're going at least three times a week and actually participate and use most of the things. i paid membership for bally's and i only went once a week.. it was a waste of money. you just get different equipments to use, yoga/aerobic classes, a pool, and some other stuff. but a personal trainer is extra money, so you're basically working out yourself if you think about it. but it's all up to you. how serious you'll be about working out and where you want to get to with your body. if you're just toning, i suggest you just do it at home.

of cuz, running outside on ur own saves u money... but u might get lazy...
but if u go to the gym it'll somehow give u motivation to go tone ur body, because u have already paid for it.
and yea... there are classes and instructors to guide u along.
if u are sure u will go to the gym, u should.

Mmm, I prefer running outside more. ^^;

You can run on your own time, and you don't have to worry about wasting money.
(My mom got a gym membership for a few hundred dollars, and she doesn't even go anymore. crazy.gif )

Plus, the fresh air and sunshine feels really good sometimes. (:

i thought a gym membership was a waste of money til i got a 7 day free trial thing for golds gym..and i absolutely loved it! im thinking about joining them now, too...i love all the equipment and the music..and im really motivated in there..i dont think i can go back to running outside :] but it depends on the price and policy if its worth it or not...$40 a month i feel isnt too bad if ur gonna go at least a few times a week..but the down payment is $85 for a student unsure.gif but they allow u to cancel ur membership anytime without any consequences...so id look at their prices and everything before u make a decision :]

It's FUN but SCARY having a GYM MEMBERSHIP

If you want to get toned, go to the gym

If you want to lose weight, run outside

The gym as everything for everybody, if you want to lose weight, gain muscle, get toned, etc.

Running outside only for weight lose, but has nice scenory

If you don't want to spend money and end up not going to the gym much, then go run outside lol

Even though there are people at the gym, that may not make you determined, esspecially if they are more TONED, MUSCULAR, THINNER, and BIGGER than you, it just makes you more INSECURE lol.

I have a gym membership but I never go blush.gif the last time I went wasa year and a half ago and now I'm ANOREXIC LOOKING, so I really want to go to the gym tomorrow, but I doubt I'll go lol

SO YEAH! you should get a GYM MEMBERSHIP!

the only reason why people go to the gym is because when you're around other people working out, you're more motivated. That, and they have almost everything you need smile.gif

losing weight when youre not fat is the same thing as toning isnt it?? bc if you lose weight it will give your body more definition..when i did TJ i did not watch my diet much but it still toned me up, and i did not lose any weight..i dont think even a pound was shed..so im looking forward to losing weight..i wonder what that will do for my body x)

i think im going to give running outside a try..and if i cant stay motivated, ill try the gym membership, but the membership seems like a big commitment..i HOPE i HOPE i HOPE i can stick with running outside..not for just a week, but make it a lifelong plan so i can stay fit for as long as possible! =)

well it depends on what you do. i know some people who pay for a membership and all they do is run on the treadmill. seriously, such a waste of money. it's way better for you to go outside and run than to run on a treadmill. however, if you need equipment and want to to do more than just run then yes, join a gym. but gyms are pretty expensive and make you sign a contract so i'd suggest you join the ymca.

my college has a pretty nice gym and it's already built into the tuition which i dislike because i think it's unfair for the people who don't even use it.
