hi, i was wondering... how do you hardsub a video leaving good quality but still about the same file size? i encode it using virtualdubmod and i use Xvid codec and i try to keep the compression to 5.00 and it compresses the video A LOT, yet i still end up with a video thats more than 1GB and it started out with 350mb >< please help me!

you might want to try to lower the bitrate of the video. maybe try VBR video?
also...make sure you compress the AUDIO track too. maybe with lame mp3 encoder?
that should bring the sizes down.

well..when you're encoding in your program..when you goto save your file...usually you get to choose your codec (yours is xvid)..then you can press configure? alternatively...goto start menu>programs>xvid>configure encoder to get to these following windows (pics below).
VirtualDub example

then press "target quantizer" and the option to set bitrate will come up.
Adobe Premiere example

(rest of the video encoding programs are similar to these interfaces)
try multiple passes (2-pass) encoding to lower bitrates.
i'm guessing this is for your divx + dvd player?

This is a very old thread concerning XviD which I encourage you to read. It will show you how to do two-pass encoding in XviD which is essential in getting accurate filesizes and maximum quality.
