Hey guys,

I know this isn't a homework forum, but I really need some help with this. In APUSH, we have a political cartoon that we have to analyze...and I get the main idea of it, but I need to bring some outside information from the time period about this cartoon and what it means. Right now I'm talking too much in generality.

Here is the political cartoon. It's by Frank Leslie, printed in 1887.



At the bottom of the image [it's cut off on this one], it should say "Too many cooks spoil the broth." The pot says "Labor Interest". There are four "cooks" holding a spoon each; each spoon has a different name of an organization: labor union, anarchist, socialist, & knight of labor.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out, even if it's just a little bit ^^;;

Well, I don't know if I'm much of a help, buut--
Near 1887, when the political cartoon was published, would be considered the time marking the beginning of Progressivism and the ending of the Gilded Age. Because of the massive amount of political and economic corruption, there was a large uprising in strikes and labor unions-- many to be thought of as anarchists (which the govt grew afraid of). Many workers were also socialists because the laissez-faire principle (govt is hands-off with business) was not aiding them at all-- they wanted government ownership of business. The political cartoon is basically saying that there were too many groups fighting for labor interest, but it ruined their voices altogether, "Too many cooks spoil the broth"--
