Jane Kim on the set, playing a room salon girl, in West 32nd

Some of her mannerisms are decidedly girlish, so it's no surprise that she explains her character in West 32nd as thus: "My character Suki is the one character in the film who remains pure and true to herself, but contrary to what should happen, she is the one who gets the worse repercussions for that characteristic." Jane speaks sweetly with little head nods and eyes widened for emphasis. This immediate innocence complicates itself when she explains how at first she was hesitant to take on the role of Suki, a room salon girl who is witness to the murder of her lover. She plays a pivotal role in the movie, in which the murder case draws in a Korean American attorney, played by John Cho, who becomes entangled with K-town's gangster network. Jane repeats how her character is the moral center of the movie, the symbol of purity. So why was she reluctant about playing her in the beginning?
"Initially, I wasn't going to take the part. I've done a lot of work with characters who, on the surface, seem a certain way. I didn't want to be typecast. But I was looking at [Suki] in a one-dimensional way. After reviewing the script, and with the director and producer trying to convince me, I realized that this is my part, and now I'm very happy I got it. She's very different from what she seems to be at first. She seems weak and fragile, but she turns out to be [the] toughest."

What exactly is a room salon girl?
"She's like the modern day geisha. It's not part of the sex industry because you're not giving any service, but you're giving attention and making your customer feel like he's the man. I actually had no concept what it was, so I went and did research."

And as for Jane's initial reluctance to play a room salon girl, Michael says, "The character of Suki could be just this object, but to me she is the heart of the movie, and she is the only purely innocent figure. I needed someone who could convey that, and mostly through presence. I needed someone who could find what's underneath and translate that to screen."

Near midnight, outside the pool hall, Jane sits in a car preparing for her scene. A tow truck will film her and Jun and pull their vehicle through the narrow streets of Flushing. The car's interior is lit, illuminating Kim as the sole brightness in the night. And it becomes obvious what the director was talking about. He's there in the flatbed making sure the camera will capture it for us. The innocence, the purity she sells it. Immediately, we know she's vulnerable, the bit of good caught up in a whole lot of ugly, not so much tragic as simply heartbreaking. We all need to save her. And only she can save us.

Please don't forget me. { I'm going away. }
I'm taking a taxi to Kentucky where they don't even know all about me. I just need to feel s a f e.
I've got a thousand sweaters, and shoes, and paintings to hide the skeletons in my way.
But he said, "Slow down, slow down. Think it over, we've all got wretched closets, but silly girl pride kills more than Aids lately."
I said, "Come on, I thought it over. I don't wanna die here. I have no desire to get mrried."
Every night I pray for you, don't believe in heaven or that it could be a happy place.

Interesting. Is it a Korean movie or Hollywood one? Since the title in the pic is in Korean.

Actually, I think it is going to start showing at film festivals in a couple of weeks. But I can't go to any of them, so I'll have to wait for it to get distributed more and on DVD.

Does anyone know how long it takes for indie films to get on DVD?!
