Probably the safest and fastest way to clean up excess junk.
After that do a defrag and thats the most basic, easy to do fixup that you can do.

Actually, before running ccleaner, go ahead and uninstall whatever programs you don't use (or no one else uses). Then run Ccleaner.
Another thing to do is go to start>run>msconfig
click on the "Startup" tab and uncheck everything that isn't essential (such as quicktime, or weatherbug) *cough* although you shouldn't have weatherbug on your comptuer in the first place.
Also, go ahead and download and run spybot: Search and Destroy and Lavasoft: Ad-aware. Those are 2 great programs for cleaning up your system from malware.
Defenitely defrag as Awdark said. And when you are all done with cleaning up your system, right-click your C:\ drive, go to "tools" and then check your disk for errors. (Requires a reboot and a couple of hours). That should tidy up any loose ends of your data.
Have fun with this.
If you keep your computer screamin' clean, your friends might invite you over to "fix up" thier pc. Just do what was said here and they too will have a "just like new!" pc. ^_-
