My friend has done it. She was under that program, and she hated it because they do overwork you. And she is still in Japan, teaching. I'm not really sure what subject, but she is not in that program anymore. The only good thing about NOVA is that they give you housing (I think), and well...they do overwork you and the people there are really friendly...then again, some aren't. But, NOVA is a really known program in Japan. They even have an Engrish video game there.
If you would like, I can ask her a few questions if you have any.

Hey, just wanted you to know that the JET program is a pretty good! My tutorial teacher for Japanese was part of the JET program and says that they really treat you well as in arrangements and making sure you settle well in Japan when you are teaching or working there! I've heard many good responses from this program, so I thought maybe you might want to consider it
Here's some links for more info:

I'm planning to teach in japan after I get my bachelor's as well. I know that it's harder for asians to land the job because they mostly want caucasians. Luckily my last name is Gunn so they won't suspect my nationality til they actually see me =P.
Lets meet up when we're in japan!

my boyfriend attended NOVA and his teacher hit on him. people at NOVA have a really bad name and the whole school does; you should take that into consideration before you apply

Hi everyone
sorry to bring up an old thread but i wanted to ask whether any one has had any experience in these programs? I'm about to graduate from a Commerce degree, and i wanted to travel a bit, and Japan has always been somewhere I've wanted to go; i also studied Japanese in my VCE, so a bit of conversation shouldnt be a problem.
So which programs are still active/are good right now? And what sort of support - ie. accomodation etc. - do they give you? I'm also concerned about having enough money, obviously, because living costs in Japan are so high, can you get by with the salary from teaching English?

^ Sorry, I don't have any first hand experience but nobody has been replying... so:
I heard the JET program is really good, my Japanese teacher has always advocated it to his students.

NOVA is gone. bankrupt.
if you are looking to go next year, you can try the JET program. the application for the 2010-2011 year is due this november. the application form is complicated and long, and if you don't do it perfectly, you're out.
aside from JET, interac (interact?) is the other big one.
their application period is more flexible. but they are more like a dispatch company.
they collect bodies (aka ALTs) and send them out to elementary and middle schools.
aeon is a private company that does things from english conversation to test prep. it's different from JET/interac in that you are NOT working at a public school.
other schools hire ALTs privately.
your best bet is one of the 3 i listed above.
they are the ones that can help you best with housing, etc.
the salary is almost always enough to live on.
you should probably be getting around $2,000USD every month after taxes. (i think?)
one bit of warning, JET (and ALTs) are somewhat well known in english speaking countries.
it might seem fun to come over and "teach", but the kids can be bad.
good luck!
i write an important thing, and do not let's finish. a way of writing for freedom.
