I heard that if you wanted to get into med school, you shouldn't major in premedicine. Instead you should major in biology or chemistry or something. Can someone validate for me and explain why?

No, that's not typically true. While med schools accept a range of applicants, majoring in premed will not hurt your chances.

No i think you shouldn't major in premedicine but try to major in Microbiology or Biochemistry. You have a higher chance of getting into medical school because one of those to major mainly focuses on science while premedicine doesn't. Or maybe i'm wrong?!? =\

guys.

premed is NOT a major.
it is a series of courses you take if you are interested in going to med school.

you can still major in ANYTHING you want.
ie - me = english. but since i plan to go to med school, i'll be taking all the premed courses.

Major in biology or chemistry just because you are getting your premed requirements done and not only that you are creating for yourself a backup just in case med school doesn't work out and in a lot of cases it doesn't. You are losing out on a lot of potential job opportunites by going to med school and digging yourself into a world of debt. Most people won't be able to get through the whole thing and having that bio and chem degree can help you out alot.

If you want to, major in chemical engineering. It's definitely a difficult major and isn't exactly one that lends itself to a great social life but it also happens to be the highest paying straight out of college on average, paying 60 grand a year.

technically there is no major called "pre-med" that's why most who go in that field take bio or chem majors

pre-med major? blink.gif never heard of it. but, there are pre med programs. from what i've heard, some pharmacy students get into pharm school by majoring in biochem. of course there are pre pharm programs, but i doubt that they're majors. probably its the same thing with most other med schools.
