i was watching a rather random naruto episode the other day and theres a part where its a flashback of the brotherly love between sasuke/itachi and there's a quote from sasuke that goes (something like)
"you always say 'forgive me little brother' and then hit my forehead"

Hashirama used the name of Hokage before the village hidden in the mist begin.

柱間率いる千手一族はどの忍びからも一目おかれ恐れられていた
Senju clan whose leader was Hashirama was respected and was afraid by every Shinobi.

千手が動けばうちはが動く
When Senju moves, Uchiha moves.

奴等を相手に出来るのうちはくらいだった
Only Uchiha could deal with Senju.

千手を雇えば対立国はうちはをやとう��柱間と対立するうちオレのなもどんどん知られた」

その意図に気付いたうちはの者もいてオレの意思を次ぐ奴も出てきた
Some members of Uchiha have noticed this and tried to execute my will.

時すでに遅し�うちはは千手の犬に成り下がっていた」
But it was too late...Uchiha has already become a dog (subordinate) of Senju.

「そしてある事件でうちはは完全に駆逐される」
And Uchiha has totally wiped out by an incident.

16年前の九尾来襲だ
The attack by Nine-tail fox in 16 years before.

それをうちはがやったと勘ぐったのがダンゾウと相談役二人
Danzo and two old advisers deduced that Uchiha did it.

九尾は天災でうちはは関係していないのに反逆を狙ったとか色々言われた
Nine-Tail fox was a natural disaster and Uchiha wasn't included it, but they said we planed rebellion and so on.

それ以降はうちはは暗部により監視されまくり里から隔離された
After that, ANBU kept watching Uchiha and Uchiha was isolated from the village.

三代目は隔離に意義を唱えたがみんな認めなかった
The third Hokage opposed this, but no one agreed with him.

そしてうちは一族里を乗っとる為にはクーデターを企んだ
And Uchiha clan planed coup d'etat to take over the village.

それを阻止したのが お前の兄うちはイタチだ
The man who stopped this was Itachi, your elder brother.

そこから奴の地獄は始まったのだ」

It just seems really unlikely to me that Madara had nothing to do with the Kyuubi attack, seeing as the Kyuubi knew who he was when Sasuke went inside Naruto's head that time and talked with him.

But I think that's a very plausible reason for the clan's massacre. Well done, Kishimoto!

my guess is Madara's spinning the truth so that Sasuke will follow him and maybe become an Akatsuki member to replace Itachi. Or Madara wants Sasuke on his side so that he can use him for some more devious things like maybe kill Naruto and then gain back the Kyuubi in his (Madara's) possession.

The reason why I prefer this different type of Itachi is that it makes him more of a complicated figure than we originally assumed him to be. Of course, we've always had a suspicion that his constant stoic expressions and his nonviolent actions hid a deeper side to him, but aside from Itachi's annoyingly stoic behavior (it's so cool that it pisses me off just like how Kakashi pisses off Guy), Itachi was always known as the mass murderer of the Uchiha clan as well as Naruto's and Sasuke's constant tormentor, but nothing much else. These new revelations bring out new dimensions of him, something I feel makes a character more pleasing than if he were just only one thing. Honestly, I've always thought of him as a serious bastard, but I've never totally considered him as a hardcore bad guy that just really needed to die (I currently give that honor to Suzaku from Code Geass; man, he really needs to go away).

Also, I don't think the question here is whether Madara is lying or not, but WHY he's lying or not. Even if his story is total bull, some parts of it still has to be true, otherwise Kishimoto would have made a rookie blunder in storytelling by deciding to nullify all the information he presented through Madara (keep in mind that Kishimoto is telling all of this history for a reason, and it's not because he wants to piss us off later by making it all false). If there is one part of his story that I'm suspicious about, it's when he talked about the Kyuubi, and his testimony as to how it appeared contrasts with what Jiraiya suspected when he thought the Kyuubi was summoned. Am I going to take the word of Jiraiya over Madara? Hell yes. Do I think Madara is completely lying? Definitely not.

Itachi entered Anbu as a spy, but as he leaked information to the village side, he was a double spy

イタチは4才で戦争を経験しているから里の安定を第一に考えていた
Because Itachi experienced a war when he was 4, he thought that the stability of the village came first

だから仕方なくうちは抹殺をした
So he had no choice but obliterating the clan

三代目は和解をしようとしたが間に合わずあの夜へと
The Third tried to compromise, but there was no time before that night

抜け忍になるのも指令の一つだった
Becoming a missing-nin was also his instructions

だがイタチは一つ失敗をした
But Itachi made one mistake

弟を殺せなかった
He didn't kill his brother

サスケをまもるように三代目に頼みサスケに手を出さないようダンゾウを脅して里を抜けた
He asked the Third to protect Sasuke, threatened Danzou to lay off Sasuke, and left.

イタチは初めからサスケに力を与え死ぬつもりだったらしい
I seems that from the beginning, Itachi intended to die and leave his powers to Sasuke
