I love Physics, but the problems (we're in forces now. our school starts all aps on 2nd half of the year) are so hard! what sort of advice can you give to me.
Me!
Oh wow. You guys are just starting? I suppose you guys are only going to be taking the AP Physics C Mechanics section, right? Unless you plan on cramming for the AP Electromagnetism because that would be insane?!
For some reason I really struggled with mechanics and am somehow amazed at the fact that I am doing just fine with electromagnetism. I'm not sure why. But, um, basically for mechanics, most of the time I got confused with the calculus that got involved, even though I'd already taken Calc BC the year before. But what about mechanics do you struggle with most? Like, what aspect of the problems? Maybe that'd narrow things down a bit.

hey
yeah we're just doing mechanics (which is good, i don't like electricity THAT much)
the math isn't that hard, its the problems and the requirement of thought in the problems.

I think my frq scores improved in APUSH.. my only concern is the DBQ b/c I have to include outside info... as for homework and reading.. yea it is pretty heavy.. but i must admit that i never read the american pageant textbook b/c i cannot focus & pick up the info unless i take some reading notes (which i don't take... too much busy work). i purchased the brief american pageant. it's basically the same textbook but it focuses on the most important info, ommitting things that aren't necessary... i also read the outlines (which should never replace the actual tb reading).. but i truly feel that REA's study guide is the best for studying before multiple choice tests.... my teacher doesn't give us m/c questions from the textbook. NEVER. he uses previous ap test questions... and questions from our lecture notes..
you can google some apush practice tests. i found this useful website w/ multiple choice practice quizzes for every different period/time/era in american history.. can't recall the name of the website but if you do some research, you'll find it...
my APUSH teacher recommends REA's study guide. he said the reading is easy and like wikipedia (but of course reliable and accurate) and the m/c questions the book offers are like the AP ones... but some questions are beyond what APUSH students should know.. so yea.. I guess I can recommend this study guide....
______________
btw.. I used BARRONS last year for APEURO.. got a 5 but i didn't solely rely on the study guide.. I actually found a really helpful website w/ detailed outlines for all the periods covered by the college board.....
_______________
since i have a test this tuesday on reconstruction, gilded age, industry, etc... i found the practice quiz website.. http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm hope it'll be helpful!!

Okay. As i have mentioned earilier in this topic: My teacher can not or just dosen't know HOW to teach. At ALL. Maybe she does know her history, but dosen't know how to teach it.
I heard from my friend who is just taking regular world history from the same teacher, that the teacher told them she didn't believe we should go to college. That AP classes weren't 'nessessary'. That she dosen't like AP classes. -.-; Then why TEACH it. Gawd.
Anyways. I went to Barnes & Nobles after it finnally hit me. This teacher won't prepare us for the AP exam.
I made my purchase of the KAPLAN: AP World History book.
A month or two later, i went back for aanother resource.
PRINCETON: AP World History book.
Both books has its pro's and con's. I won't say which is better or not because--i have not taken the exam yet and i am using both books stimulariously.
My opinion on KAPLAN & PRINCETON is that.
-Princeton "talks" to you. Its like listening to a lecture.
-Kaplan book allows room to take marginal notes & talk-to-text-ing. Princeton on the other hand, doesn't really have room for that. (unless you are willing to kram information on the sides?)
-Princeton has a awesome method for multiple choice section. (POE & Guess and Go & Don't). I am currently trying to "master" this skill. But i love it how they teach you step by step how to do it.
-Kaplan book oprovides alot of sample essays. And after each unit, provides sample essays for all the different essays! And a test at the end to test yourself on your k nowledge. (im not sure if its in AP format tho; im pretty sure kaplan tried to make it ap format)
-Princeton and Kaplan both has 2 practice tests at the end. (Since i purchased both; i guess i'll have 4 prac. tests! haha)
-Princeton and Kaplan both offers good, main-point-ed review of each unit. (Princeton suggests us to go back into the chapter if we don't know more about the subject or we dont' remember it at all. Pretty good suggestion..)
Overall,
If you like a reviewbook that "talks" to you
EX: "Imagine early people. Really early people. They hadn't yet built cities. They didn't know how to farm. ......Because they didn't have adv. tools and hadn't yet developed anything as sophisticated as farming, the best way for them to.."
EX2: "The social and political structure in the roman republic consisted of patricians and plebeians and slaves. Does this sound familiar? It should. Its very similar to the social structure of Ancient Greece."
and constantly compares&contrasts to you;
PRINCETON is the way to go.
Although some cons (or pro's, depending on situation); Princeton tends to tell it like a story. A lecture. I like it. But it takes an awful lot of time to read. Highlighing & underlining helps.
If your looking for a more "its like this" book; that has facts after facts after facts directly,
EX: "Early farmers began to organize themselves in a more permanent way through the formation of villages. ....Neolithicc revolution changed the way people lived their lives since it took hundreds, if not thousdands of years of change..."
EX2:"The indus is a civilization with much mystery eventoday. This civilization was discovered only in the early 20th century. Developed between 3000-2500 BCE and declined by 1500 bce.."
KAPLAN is the way to go.
I like to go through kaplan & princeton stimulariously(is that word? o.o) though. I have both books open in front of me. My text book from school And my notes (w/ outlines from myhistorylab.com).
I wish i started this sooner. actually READING the chapter. I relied on my crazy teacher too much; and only realized halfway through the year that this teacher isn't going to prepare me at all; that i have to take it into my OWN hands.
So here i am down to 3months.
ULTRA cramming.
I'm double-ing up to like 2 chapters a week & will be doing more.
Going back to ch 1. (i'm on ch 5. Unit 1 done. MEGA unit 1 review w/ kaplan, my notes, and princeton, then doing the same for Unit 2-4)
I wish everyone with AP classes (and of course, expecially AP world history), the best of luck.
*That above is just my opinion
Just go to barnes&nobles or ur local bookstore and take a look at the two books yourself. See which book is right for you (:

BIG TIP: My teacher gave us this tip and yes it is very helpful. Don't focus on the white people. Haha. Yeah Europe and US is not important really. Focus on the non-white people i.e. Asia, Middle East, Africa, etc.

Hmm, I'm a senior this year, and I took 5 AP tests my junior year as well.
My AP scores last year were:
English Language:4
APUSH:4 (I don't know how that happened, I know absolutely no history.)
Psychology:5 (Honestly, this test was amazingly easy, and I didn't even buy a prep book. o_o;)
Biology:4
Chemistry:4 (On one of my free response questions, I had to draw the structure of something... and I drew a flower instead. Whoo!)
This year, I'm taking:
English Literature, US Government, Physics [B], World History, and Calculus [BC]
..My brain is exploding.

I'm not sure if I should apply for AP Calc AB and Stats.. mm. I know Stats is more geared towards those planning to take a humanities or psych major in college.. but I don't really know much about the class in general. :x
I have to turn in AP apps in 2 days and oy, I am so indecisive. I probably won't be able to take all the ones I apply for since my school sucks.
what's AP Bio like? A lot of people say it's incredibly boring..
I'm only taking AP Chinese this year and I will FAIL the test. I'm so scared.. my teacher doesn't teach my class like it's an AP.. my Chinese isn't so great either. I don't speak Mandarin at home.. ahh.. last year, there was 100% passing rate for AP Chinese in my school. Practically everyone was a native Chinese/Taiwanese person T_T. Ah.. I only have 3 months left. My teacher handed out the format for the exam.. ee. I think the first part (multiple choice, listening, and reading) won't be too bad... but the second part (writing and speaking) will hurt me the most

AP US Government

For AP Bio, most people recommend the Sparknotes book. I believe the most current one is the 3rd edition.
As for the other two, I'd like to know too. I know my AP Govt book comes with a workbook/study book, but I haven't taken any time to look it over yet. And for Calc, some people I know swear by the Barron's book - which, now that I think of it, I should go get. I have the Calc REA ... and it's not that great. I mean, it's nice if you want to learn how to do the problems, but if you want something to review by [ie. goes through the basics, practice problems] it's not the right book.
I'm in AP Bio right now, and for me, it just depends on the day. Usually, if it's a lab day, the class is much MUCH more fun. It also depends on the people in your class - like, my class is the more "interesting, off the wall" one [even though we're the early class] while the other class is more "serious". If you do plan to take it though, just know that it's gonna be a lot of new terms and memorization. But really, the level of "entertainment" [for lack of a better word. it's 2am and yes, I'm studying for bio XD] all depends on what you like and how the teacher teaches it. The material may be dry, but if you get a good teacher, it'll be easier to catch on.

Ahh, same with me! I don't know if I should take AP Calc or AP Stats next year .__.
Everyone is taking Stats since the calc teacher is harder (I had her last year for alg 2 and she is hard but she really does help). I don't know. I'm leaning towards calc.
I just turned my AP registration form in today.
APUSH + English Language HAH. What a joke. I know I'm gonna fail both of them. I know nothing about history and English.. I always do so bad in writing.
I'm gonna take AP Chinese next year. I'm scared for the exam too.
I'm just nervous for the listening and speaking, especially speaking! Watch me say something in Cantonese instead hahas.
Listening.. blah that's what screwed me over on the SAT II. 790.. darn almost perfect! Stupid listening lol.
