Well, i recently changed into Linux due to the fact that Windows has been pissing me off with the Activation Code and what not even though i have a genuine version of Windows. Also the lack of protection and freezing up way too much.
So i changed to Ubuntuu Linux, and i am pretty happy. It is very beautiful and many things are alot better such as combining my msn and aim into one program. I have to get used to it but after i do i will enjoy it to the fullest. I still can't install programs like warcraft 3 but ill figure it out sometime.
Who else is a happy Linux user? or unhappy or what not.

I can relate to that one line.
I have tried many versions of linux... knoppix, auditor, backtrack, DSL, puppy, ubuntu, xubuntu, gentoo...
For all of them I accomplished the "impossible" I crashed linux. Made it so it just died. Wouldn't boot to the gui...
I really like DSL and Knoppix hardware compatibility. KDE is great but I was trying to use it on a ultra low end machine and whatever DSL uses forgot was a very nice light end one but I found it too boring...
Ubuntu was really nice, one of the few full linux distros I tried but hardware compatibility was the worse! Any distro that doesn't ship with Prism2 chipset drivers is too weird for me!
Looks are nothing, after seeing XGL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz_2vKq5cZk I know the openness of linux is great. But what I found hilarious was this http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL
Linux needs to work together or make one BIG dominate distro. Right now linux is like some crazy mini project that everyone homebrews. Join together, make a standard... make it so I can click a SETUP.exe
I don't want to compile sources. I don't want to recompile the whole ... kernel. I just want to use it. Install programs... tweak.
Its Windows, Apple, and "Other"...

why not just dual boot? load windows for games and other windows-specific apps, and linux for everything else?

Brokefang: are the linux really owned by Microsoft? Never heard that before, but its a moot point for me. As long as its free/cheap, works well at what I want to do and I don't have to agree to ridiculous terms when installing the software I'm happy =]

I think thats a rather bold statement. Ultimately everyone has different wants and needs for their computers. At my university, they threw out a bunch of PC's for iMac's (or some updated version of them) as they found they had a lot less issues. I on the other hand have no motivation to pay ~200$ for an operating system when all I use it for is surf the internet, watch movies/dramas, listen to music, and do work. As such I'm sticking to windowsXP which I got for free from my university. I've tried Ubuntu and was thrilled with what I saw, but I had some problems with my s-video cable to work, and didn't feel like using wine to get certain programs I need for university to run. I'd love to switch back or try another distro, perhaps next version of ubuntu (coming out in April?) will do the trick

"The primary difference between Linux and other contemporary operating systems, for example Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and other proprietary UNIX systems, is that the Linux kernel, the GNU userland, and other components are free software, which is also known as open source software."
"In the United States, the name Linux is a trademark registered to Linus Torvalds.[27] Initially, nobody registered it, but on August 15, 1994, William R. Della Croce, Jr. filed for the trademark Linux, and then demanded royalties from Linux distributors. In 1996, Torvalds and some affected organizations sued to have the trademark assigned to Torvalds, and in 1997 the case was settled.[28] The licensing of the trademark has since been handled by the Linux Mark Institute. Torvalds has stated that he only trademarked the name to prevent someone else from using it, but was bound in 2005 by United States trademark law to take active measures to enforce the trademark. As a result, the LMI sent out a number of letters to distribution vendors requesting that a fee be paid for the use of the name, and a number of companies have complied."
"On November 2, 2006, Novell and Microsoft announced a joint patent agreement to cover their respective products [1] [2]. They also promised to work more closely together, in order to improve their software's ability to work with other software, setting up a joint research facility to do this. Both companies hope this will lead to better compatibility between Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org and better virtualization techniques.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said of the deal, "This set of agreements will really help bridge the divide between open-source and proprietary source software." [3]
The deal involves upfront payment of $348 million from Microsoft to Novell for patent cooperation and SLES subscription. Novell will pay around $40 million to Microsoft over 5 years[4]."
...And that seems atypical of business behavior of one company owning the other
I'm not trying to say you're wrong on either accounts, it's just that what I've read doesn't seem to parallel what you stated

Linux is an open source OS, so anyone can modify it to enhance the use or fix bugs etc, its just that the rights/name etc are owned by Microsoft/Novell
