yeah its definitely the image they're portraying base upon their fan base because if you look at se7en (1984), tei (1983), and rain (1982) and compare them to heechul, eeteuk, ryan (all 1983er's) and other boyband idols, the demographic of their fan bases are mostly either older fans or fans ranges in age whereas the majority of boyband's fan base comprises of teens. thus, the type of fanservice is different, in this example, you see the fanservice from se7en and rain is often more sensual whereas from these boybands its more acting/performing cute.
also, i think this maturity/age difference issue is only really apparent in male celebs than female celebs because you don't see female celebs acting overtly cute on shows as much because imo, fear of attracting antis. i think korean neitzens are more tolerant of their male celebs and their actions and when male celebs often act cute, neitzens often see it as cute whereas if a female celeb was to often act cute in their appearances on shows neitzens would automatically be like, "oh she's trying to hard" or "she's so fake" (and its not just being cute, but also sexy, shy, etc). i think this is why we see more male celebs getting away with acting overtly cute in variety shows/performances than females because the industry or rather fans often have this double standard against females celeb than male celebs.
as a fan, it honestly gets annoying for me at times to see them acting cute over and over again in varity shows but i know its to please the majority of their fanbase.
