Anyone else in their... *ahem*.. 5th year of undergrad? (like me... tears.gif ). I had to do an extra year because I switched programs within my faculty from pre-med to biotech in 3rd year and I also tried to squeeze in a minor for business management (at U of Waterloo in Ontario). Unfortunately I couldn't get it all done in 4 years, plus there were a couple of terms when I only took 4 course because I was feeling burnt out. Anyways how do you guys feel about it? I look around and everyone else is first year or second year and only in their TEENS! I feel sooo old. And even talking to girls makes me feel like a dirty old guy now because they're all so young. Not to mention I decided to live in a dorm of mostly first years this term because of the distance and caf, I was getting sick of cooking. But still, I want to get out of here sooo bad, gah! I never thought I'd be in school for so long crazy.gif ...

lol. The dirty old guy part got me.
But it's okay - take your time.
My brother is also in his fifth year as an undergrad.
And he's doing a sixth year.
Me, I'll probably stay in college for a lifetime too -
my grades aren't so hot right now and I currently have no clue where I'm headed.
I'm just kinda...here. lol.

i wish i could hurt you as much as you hurt me
i wish you would love me as much as i loved you

I don't think you should stress so much.
Statistics say that most people are 5 years to finish their undergrad instead of the traditional 4.

And I think it's better to take 1 extra year in college to study what you want than to end up with a degree that you don't want.

so... what, you're freaking out over being a 22-year-old talking to 18-year-olds, as opposed to being 21 and talking to 18-year-olds? i don't think i really see what the big deal is. try doing what i did -- taking time off college and returning years later. then you'll know what it's like to be a 26-year-old in a crowd of people who can't get into bars. on top of that, my school had very few returning students. so almost everyone else really was in the 18-22 range.

i mean, i know how it feels, probably more so than you would, in fact, to feel alienated from your classmates because of the age difference, and feel depressed about how long it's taking to finish up, but you're talking about one extra year for the sake of doing what you want, not five or ten. i think once you graduate, you're just going to land a job and wonder, "what the heck was i freaking out about?"

dont worry about it. my brother graduated his 5th year, (Which is considered average, I guess, at his school). and plenty of people don't graduate until after 5+ years, it's not surprising. I would blame the school for this also because limited number of classes. Some classes that you want/need that are only available once a year are pain in the butt because they are always filled up that you can't even get in at all. It sucks. but that's life.

And! At least you're not one of those people who start college so late in their life, I think it would be more awkward if you were a 49 year old person living in dorms. But who cares about what people think really. Just focus on school and try to graduate as soon as you want.

mellow.gif I'm also in my fifth year of college. Who cares? It's better to take longer so that you can focus on getting better grades rather than trying to rush it and get mediocre grades.

i think the importance is that you are at least going to college.
some peeps are not even attempting their 5th year.

actually, here at my college, the upper classmen are respected and looked upon
as peeps the younger ones can learn from.

you're fine.

aja!

I think it's great that you're making the most out of your college life and trying to learn as much as you possibly can. As for me, I'm 19 and I will be graduating from university in June 2007. My school runs on trimestral system, and my major only takes 3 years to complete. Well, I have to say that my college life has flown by so quickly that there really wasn't time for me to explore and enjoy new avenues and learn as much as I probably should have. I have good grades and all, but then, you know, I have to admit that I missed out on a lot because I was too busy working towards finishing my degree on time. sad.gif

as long as you're not in our 5th year cause you failed 15 classes or so.... then it's no worries.

my old roommate was in his 7th year.... but he was taking his time...

i'd be more surprised seeing a 15 year old in college, rather than a 30 year old....

Taking 5 years instead of 4 is not going to matter. You will still find a job and then no one will care how old you are as you will be lumped into the "younger" category. Don't stress it, as long as you are enjoying it.

nothing wrong with that at all. i transfered schools and lost a lot of credits...
so if all goes well...i'll graduate by my 5th year. a lot of people take 5 years during undergrad.

In Britain I heard it was a custom of taking a year off after graduating from high school to try various things.

It's not that bad graduating in 5 years.

i hope you know that these days, it takes on average of 4-6 years to graduate from college. alot of it is because people are changing majors and also because they are juggling work with school.

i'll be graduating when i'm 24, after 6 years of college. like you, i also have a major change, but mine was a bit of a bigger leap - from biochem to (graphic) design. 1.5 years as biochem, 1.5 years as graphic design. i'm transferring into an art school after this summer as a sophomore so i've still got 3 years to go. in the grand scheme of things, a year or two will make very little difference.

Don't let the age discourage you from getting close to people. smile.gif College should be a place for all adults to explore regardless of how old they are. I have met people who are as old as my dad, he's 59, and he's one of my friends even though he is about my dad's age. I'm on my 5th year because I switched major too.

Anyway, hope you'll enjoy the rest of your last year wink.gif.

ohhh... it's only 5 years and you didn't fail
so why feel bad? You just chaged your course and stuffs.
Unlike my brother he took college for 7 years cause he kept on failing, cause his english wasn't gud
and the only language he could only speak is Chinese that time...

Don't worry, you'll graduate soon.... Aja!!

I'm also entering college this year in another 4 days... YEAH!!! finally.
