I know it's an audio file but......~ I have no clue about it =P
My friend said that it's the same as mp3..
But I doubt my mp3 player (which only plays mp3s and wmas) will play m4a..
do you think it'll play m4as?~~

You have to convert it before you can put it in your mp3 player!
IT IS a little like .mp3; it stands for Mpeg 4 Audio.
the reason why it's not .mp4 is because quicktime already uses that for it's video and audio...thus .m4a..."Mpeg 4 Audio"
your device might be listed under compatibility...what model is it?

And all will be explained in good time.

it is generally not recomended to convert from .mp3 to .m4a, the reason being they are sister formats! usually "conversion" is between two totally different formats...like .avi and .wmv
It is recomended to first burn the .m4a to cd and then rip it off the cd to .mp3; that way there is a inbetween medium so there's no loss of translation in the conversion process. sucks huh? Don't get me wrong, there ARE converting programs...but since the algorithms are almost the same...it DIEEES DIESSS!! and there could be glitches!! OH NO!!
the easiest way to test if your model is...compatible is...to put it on your mp3 player...and see if it works ^^'' if you havent already... >_>
if it doesn't work...then I suggest you burn to cd and rip into .mp3; which might end up saving you space!!
if you NEED to convert...the only programs that DO so...cost money; but I'm sure there are other ways too

And all will be explained in good time.

I have to really question how you got the music file. Did you get it illegally? Usually .m4a files are from the iTunes Music store, and I don't think you can transfer a .m4a file from one computer to the other.

it's true iTunes uses it, but it will be the next format for audio. Trust me, it's soo much better.

And all will be explained in good time.

^It's better? Eh elaborate please ;D
Whenever a format is "better" it usually gets the files smaller, plays back at a higher quality... and looses less data during the compression. AND the music companies got to put some DRM into it so you cant pirate away
