Anyways...throughout my high school career, I've always been below the minimum weight to donate blood, freshman year I was 92lb, sophemore year 98 lb, and so on, I gained weight progressively (you have to be 110 lb to donate), so I wanted to donate blood before graduation and lately have been eating a lot to gain the minimum weight, but my weight is so unstable. Since the weight I have been gaining isnt like my natural weight, more like gaining on purpose and so...after I eat a whole bunch, I'm exactly 110 but then the next day, I lose a lb or two -.-

Question is, will I be okay if i still donate blood, even with my "fake" weight.. I don't want to be fainting ph34r.gif And is it okay to be gaining weight like this for something such as this purpose? Is anybody else doing anything like this? xD

they have a minimunm weight for a reason, because its more likely that a smaller person will faint after donating blood. i mean, you have really good intention in trying to do this smile.gif , but i dont think its worth it if youre gonna end up hurtig yourself

Hmmmm.. I had this same thought. I'm underweight, too, and I wanted to give blood. I missed the blood drive because I left town though. lol.

But anyway, I'm not an expert or anything, this is just my opinion. I think it's unhealthy to do so. In the end, will they let you give blood when they scale you and see you're a pound or two under, anyway? So there will be a chance that you won't even be allowed to give blood.

You should ask someone who is coordinating it. If they have no idea, find the hotline for it (probably on the permission slip to give blood) and call and ask.

And... You had this mindset since Freshman year? Wow. That's a lot of weight that you've been determined to gain.

I don't recommend you donating blood if you're not 110 or a little above it because you might feel extremely dizzy, weak for that day and would probably would have to laid down for couple of hours. That's what happen to my friend, who wanted to give blood, but she was 107, so she ate a big breakfast and almost fainted after giving blood. I wanted to give blood too because my teacher offered extra credit, but then I didn't weight enough, so I didn't want to risk it.

I'm trying to gain weight for a lot of reasons, one of them being to donate blood. I'm not pushing myself or anything, but it's just a goal I have in mind. I wouldn't donate blood if you're underweight...it seems dangerous.

Gaining weight to donate blood is a noble idea, but in reality, it's not a healthy way of doing it. There are plenty of ways you can help besides donating blood. How about offering your time to volunteer at your local American Red Cross? I've done it before, and it's really great, especially if you like food, volunteer for the canteen.

Also, just because you're the right weight doesn't mean you're allowed to donate blood. There are a lot of restrictions when it comes to donating blood because ARC has to make sure that your blood is suitable for those in need. They check for all kinds of past and potential diseases you might carry, so don't go wasting your pint of blood because they will throw your blood away if it's unacceptable.

I tried twice, and the first time I nearly fainted because my body couldn't take the shock. I was okay the second time, but in the end, they still couldn't use my blood because I have certain antibodies that might pose a potential risk to those who are immunocompromised.

Give thoughts as to why you want to do it, and if you can't donate blood because you're underweight, you always have other ways to help out. It doesn't have to be donating blood. Fluctuating your weight like that is a danger to your health.

I've always been under 110, so I've never been able to give blood. But..think about it..if they take the same amount of blood from someone who's 110 lbs and someone who's 150 lbs..the blood loss will definitely affect the person who's 110 a lot more by mere percentages. They take quite a bit out of you
