The Princess and The Frog Disney Gets Their First Black Princess

John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid) then came out and presented The Princess and the Frog. It represents Disney's return to 2-D animated musicals. The story is set in 1920's New Orleans and features music by Randy Neuman. It covers jazz, gospel, zydeco, and more. There are eccentric characters like Mama Odie (our Fairy Godmother) who has a "seeing eye snake". We saw 8 minutes of the film including a musical number entitled "Friends on the Other Side". It featured a voodoo magician voiced by Keith David (who knew he could sing??). I never thought I'd see voodoo in a Disney film, but it looks fantastic. The whole New Orleans setting looks beautiful on the screen. The musical number shows the prince being turned into a frog amidst trippy animation that makes Pink Elephants on Parade look tame. We were then treated to another scene where the prince and the princess, both turned into frogs, have some tongue trouble as they get tangled up while learning to catch flies. A misguided, trumpet playing gator named Louie (get it??? Armstrong???) tried to help them but it takes Ray the Cajun firefly to get them untangled. Overall it looked fun and should be an interesting new animated feature.

I like the plot lines of a lot of Disney movies, and I'm glad they're back to the traditional drawing style. It's about time they had a black princess
I'm going to TRY to be objective about the movie and not base my thoughts on how they represent blacks, but it looks cute, and I don't think that'll be a problem.

I am going into it just plain excited and for a long list of reasons! Like you said, the jazz and culture of New Orleans is a major draw for me and so is the 2D animation. I hope people give the movie a chance rather than just make assumptions about Tiana's role in the film. This IS the return of 2D animation in my mind and I am super optimistic. Doesn't December seem too far away!?!?

Featuring the voices of Anika Noni Rose (as Princess Tiana), Oprah Winfrey, Keith David, Jenifer Lewis, Terrence Howard and others, The Princess and the Frog hits theaters in a limited run in New York and LA on November 25th, followed by a wide release on December 11th. Disney has released the first five minutes with one caveat some of the animation is incomplete.

So? Most of the Disney classics are based off of books- the little mermaid, cinderella, etc.
It's great that Disney finally have their first black princess, but I'm more excited that it's going back to 2D. I hope the songs are great too.

I have to say I loved the movie..although I think the character development felt a lil rushed I enjoyed everything.
I loved Tiana's independent woman attitude and not to mention her many outfits, her dress at the end was very pretty.
Naveen was freaking handsome
The funniest characters in the whole movie went to Ray, The Alligator and Charlotte.
I cried when Ray passed away because it caught me off guard.
This is a must see for all Disney fans.
