What you should do is open up Internet Explorer then go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab. Enable the option for IE to check whether it's the default browser. Apply it then hit ok. Close IE then reopen it. When it asks you whether you want to set it as the default browser hit YES. Now go back to the same options screen and turn off that option you checked earlier.
Next, open up Firefox and go to Tools > Options > Main tab. Hit the Check Now button that's next to the "Always Check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup". Hit yes then restart your browser. Now try and see if you can install that Shockwave player.
You may or may not have to backup your bookmarks if you want to uninstall Firefox. C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Profile name>\ is where your bookmarks are located and I'm not 100% sure if it's deleted when you uninstall Firefox. Speaking of which, if you ever lose your bookmarks in Firefox there's always backup bookmark files automatically made for the past 5 days in that folder. It's a very neat feature of Firefox.
If you want to play it safe though then here's how to backup your bookmarks. Go to Bookmarks menu > Organize bookmarks then Export your bookmarks to a file on your harddrive. After installation, you can Import it back although I think all your bookmarks will be sorted in alphabetical order.
