so I only have 1 (and sometimes 2) laptops on my wireless network. if it matters, i have a D-link router. My wireless has gotten very very very slow lately and i think it's because my neighbors are using my wireless connection. I know theres a way to "lock" it but I can't remember what it is. anyone have the instructions? thank you.

Well if thats what you suspect, take a look at the lights... when your computers are off and your lights are blinking
..
Right?!
So setup wep.
General way...
Login to router, 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.100 (probably .0.1 )
Enter your username and password. Probably admin and blank. (if it is, PLEASE go change your username and password for your ISP
)
under wireless settings you should see encryption... wep encryption is what you seek.
after that it gets rather specific, so if you can find your model number it would really help.

yup wep encryption. if not everyone would have access if they have a wireless device on their computers nearby. over here in singapore, people have been caught and the penalty is jail/fine. dangerous huh..

use WPA encyrption on your router if you can. its more secure than WEP, which has been proven to be cracked before...if your neighbour is tech-savy.
thers also mac filtering and ssid cloaking..which will be enough to hide your wireless router from your neighbour (assuming he/she is not a tech-wiz)

WPA is equally hackable. They have some great cracking tools in the Backtrack cd.
So if they're savvy, WPA would just take them a bit longer to crack (10 minutes is the record for wep 64bit I believe) and mac filtering is a joke since they can just change their MAC to match yours, and SSID cloaking is easily detectable with different scanners such as Kismet.
IMO, just stick with 128bit WEP. Older, but more standardized since a lot of hardware has issues with newer encryption... and you get more lag!
Secure and wireless shouldn't really be used in the same sentence, but we just mostly hope to deter casual hacking. Its like locking your car's door. If they wanted to break in and steal stuff they will... they just have to try a bit harder.
