When you go grocery shopping, do you share what you get with your roommates? In my house, we write our names on everything we get, so we can't steal from each other. i know its selfish, but if we dont do that someone always eats more than others, and its not fair.

What do u usually get when u go grocery shopping too? (i feel like i do it wrong sometimes, and then i spend too much on too little food) i usually get ground beef, some pasta, celery, eggs, milk, crystal light, frozen chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, hamburger helper, smiles, pretzels, and microwave popcorn.

at the end of the day, i end up spending 43 something dollars. am i spending too much? (i already ate 90% of my food...)

hahahaha so how do u deal with making food and sharing and all that jazz?

at our house we have a designated shelf/section in the fridge for our own stuff. other than that, we write our initials on the item if you're scared somone's gonna steal some of your milk or something... but we don't usually worry about that. guess we're pretty good with not eating other people's stuff. If you didn't put it in, don't take it out.

Typically we more or less know who's food it is and some of us has separate fridges in addition to the large common one (b/c that one is filled up so easily). Items such as oil, soy sauce, paper towels and stuff like that we buy in bulk from Costco and split the cost.

My roommates and I are pretty lenient, and any rules are unspoken. We all share milk, eggs, butter, bread, etc. But since we're all pretty picky about things like cereal and dinners, we know to just eat our own things. We ask a lot, too.

None of us share our groceries. None of us have meal plans either. Anyway, we all have our own refrigerator. When we didn't, we just knew what was ours though.

I usually get some type of fruit, some veggie, dried cranberries, granola bars, crystal light, diet soda, 01 frozen meal, milk, ramen, crackers, bread, sandwich meat, and something for a couple big meals for the week (usually spaghetti stuff)

my roommate and i have different food preferences so we don't share groceries or cook together. we don't exactly put our names on anything but generally put our food in different compartments. and i normally buy food according to a recipe i'm following so i buy different things every time i go, but otherwise i always get a lot of fruit and milk.

I have my own little mini fridge in my single room so I usually just put my food in there and I don't put anything downstairs because people would eat my stuff without asking and it bugged me. But we're pretty chill about not eating other people's food... At least, I don't do it O_O Even that becomes a problem sometimes because some of the food goes bad but no one takes it out -___-

My roommate's vegetarian, I am not. So it's pretty easy not to eat each others' stuff. If I'm short on things like sugar or eggs, I'll ask for hers, but otherwise the left side of the fridge/freezer is mine, and the right side is hers biggrin.gif

I always shop around the perimeter of grocery stores (the refrigerated aisles) for meat, dairy, and produce. I don't need much else... sometimes oil and tomato sauce. I try not to buy processed foods. It's been working pretty well... except I'm almost forced to eat out when I'm really busy/too tired to make something. Everything I buy is on sale for the week, but I still end up spending about $60 + dine-out food every 1~2 weeks.

wow. my cousins did that, write names.

my roommate and i... we're both more on the respect, shy side.
we dont touch eachother's food and we offer it to eachother.

i think you should buy things that you can cook that will last long.
    like the things you've bought.

too bad there's not .99 cent store here near me...

last year my roomates and I also wrote our names on our food. I didn't feel so bad because we all agreed we weren't sharing food. This year i have new roomies and we don't share food either. However, we don't write our names on our food.

Last year i cooked rice a lot and made my own meals. This year I started to buy a lot of frozen food since I'm kind of too busy to cook. $43 well that depends on how long the food lasts you and how often you go shopping. I shop once a week and end up spending about $25.

i used to share food with my roommate until i realized that he'd eat more than me and i'd have to pay more...
so now we buy our own share. and we put it on different shelves so we know whose food is whose~

We don't share anything except pots/pans and utensils. We each have our own cabinets to keep things. We know what in the fridge is and isn't ours, so we don't need to write names on anything. I mean, if you didn't buy eggs, it's not like somebody needs to tell you that the eggs in the fridge aren't yours. We don't buy many of the same things, anyway.

I spend very little on groceries, because I don't have a lot to spend. Forty-three dollars would be more than triple what I usually spend in a week. I buy lentils, rice, milk, oatmeal, spinach, beans and sometimes I get various other vegetables like onions or peppers. Occasionally I'll break down and buy peanut butter. Outside of that I steal food from school events.

groceries arent cheap and produce from american markets are EXPENSIVE! making curry is pricey. potatoes, carrots, onions, curry box, meat, and then the rice if you dont have it already.

sometimes buying fast food is cheaper than making food at home.

whoa sounds like you really do spend a lot on food! i used to spend maybe $25/week on grocerries (when i lived alone)..and that would last my three melas a day including fruits and one or two bags of snacks...but then i went to korean markets so maybe that's why it's cheaper.

when I first moved in with my 3 other roomies we would go grocery shopping every two weeks. that was a BAD idea..one of my roomies was so thrifty, she always chose the generic brands and would compare prices FOR EVERYTHING which took up half of our shopping time. I'm all for saving money but cmon 10 cents is not a big deal. the other roomie would buy the expensive junk food that none of us really ate (haagen daz ice cream bars, cakes, etc), the 3rd roomie was barely home, and I was the health food freak. therefore we came to an agreement the 4 of us would buy our own groceries. I usually bought:

-wheat bread, 2% milk, sliced deli meat, cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, veggies, ground up meat, and tons of condiments.
