I can never seem to memorize any words sad.gif sad.gif For schools, I tend to forget all the vocabs right after the test. But now there's SAT.. dry.gif dry.gif My verbal score is so low because of the sentence completion part..

So, how do you guys memorize vocab?

Thanks!

What I do is..I record the vocabulary [the word...and then a few seconds later the definition] and I just repeat it over and over on my mp3 player. It reallly helped me.

But then I'm a fast learner through music only..I can memorize lyrics after hearing a song twice. So I tend to memorize the vocabulary by recalling my voice and the definition that came after it. That's basically the only method that has been efficient for me. It really depends on what type of learner you are happy.gif;

Good luck!

i make really funny, weird sentences with the new words. that's how i remember them. flash cards help too, but not a lot.

I think of creative things to relate the definitions to the words (such as rhymes, poems, etc).... sometimes they might only make sense to me, but it still helps me remember it.

one of the hakwon teacher taught me this method and it works so well for me

the given word would be this:
pariah- outcast
then i would make a sentence:
That vegetarian pirahna is an outcast.
So when I see the word pariah next time, i remember pirahna, then outcast

another example:
Mundane: dull, boring
Monday's are boring.

Obviously, this method can't work well with all the words... but they usually do! good luck

You can try using them in sentences. Construct a conversation or something, and have some fun! Or maybe write out a play.

This probably works best if you're a writer... o.O
Still young, but I feel incredibly old. Silly me.

read books

I guess cramming words might help you in the short run but you'll forget them later

yeah i think if you associate a word with something it would help......

such as the word torrid. intimate...passionate, i remembered this because i have a friend named cristina TORRES. it's close enough so whenever i think of the word torrid i just think CRISTINA! IS PASSIONATE!

lol something like that...
also for the word APHASIA.
i remembered this because...people in ASIA can't really speak and understand english that well

def:Loss of ability to speak or understand speech.

lol....sleep.gif but sometimes other words are harder to learn..especially all of the words for the SAT O_O

I agree. Memorizing hundreds of vocabulary words and hoping they'll be on the test isn't going to help THAT much. Read more challenging books and magazines (ones that resemble the stuff on the verbal portion.. like The Economist)

Understanding prefixes, suffixes, and roots could be helpful too. If you see a word you don't know at all, you can pick it apart and get a gist of what the word means
current...
.book readings for: hk society, hk social policy, social geography, globalization & information society....... fun times.

.music kings of leon; late night alumni; the hush sound; slumdog millionaire soundtrack

I used flashcards and took them EVERYWHERE I went. Anytime you have a few minutes, just go through it. I looked like a total nerd but who cares. it worked.
good day.

i look at the spelling of the word and try to think of something that reminds me of the letters in the word.. for example, pretext. i remember the definition (an excuse) by the "ex" in both words.

i also remember some through vocab i learned in latin since a lotta english words come frm latin.

All those methods posting can help you. From my Princeton Review class, we were given these cards with vocab words on them to memorize. It really helps cause I saw quite a few of them on the SAT. Read a lot if you can and take a list of vocab words and whenever you have time, read them. Every little bit can't hurt you. It's better to gradually learn a lot of words rather than cramming it all in before the test or something.
