PSYCHOLOGY vs. SOCIAL WORK

I have figured out between these 2 to be one of my majors.

Right now I am at a community college and will transfer in a year.

Even though I still have time to choose I would like to figure it out soon because of prerequisite classes before I transfer.

So I would like to ask anyone who is taking one of these as a major or have some info you would like to share about them.

Please share so it can help me decide on choosing one of the two.

I do want to work with people in the future so I am wondering of which you think will have better job opportunities.

Thanks biggrin.gif

hm i think u still have time because usually the two require the same kinda of classes...generally

and do u mean social work as in a sociology major?
i always thought of psychology as the "safe" major because its the major that works for everything...both majors will help u work with people...though sociology would probably be better if u want to get a job that helps people...hence "social work"

There is an actual major called Social Work. I know sounds odd but I found out I can take that as a major at a California State University. Thanks. I also thought of psych being a safe major.

well i'm going through a double major in psych.
have you thought about a dual major in psych AND social work?smile.gif
if you're planning to major in general psych, and nothing specific like biopsychology, etc..then you should open your options for another major because learning the material in general psych is not that difficult(?).most of the information that you need to consume is pretty straightforward, at least in my opinion.but of course you must study.

i used to study psyche, and from what i've experienced, psyche majors can switch to social work in their careers without too much problem. but social workers cant get into psyche's more specialized fields. if you can't choose one or the other, i'd say go with psyche. (unless the school you transfer to has a kickass social work program of course)

im a psych major right now and i pretty much agree with everythin watcher said. it is easier for psych majors to switch into social work but i guess it depends on where and who u work for
