So next year at my school they're offering Chinese (Mandarin). I really want to take it because at least I could get introduced to the basics of writing/speaking + get high school credits. I speak Cantonese so this has more advantages to me. Looking at my course selection sheet, it says so far there is Chinese 1 and 2. This works out well cause I'm going to be a junior next year.
However, I was already sort of planning on taking Honors spanish 4 next year. The only reason I want to take it is because it's an honors class. If I don't take it, then I would probably only have AP Calc [assuming I get in] as an AP/Honors class next year and I can't accept that.
I don't need spanish anymore cause they only require two years to graduate and I'm already working on my third year. I guess if I really wanted to take Chinese than I can take a summer course. But maybe I could handle both? I have a pretty high A in Spanish 3 right now and my mom could help me with the Chinese.
So what should I do? I pretty much only have until Friday [well, I turn it in at school] to decide. Our counselors give us two days. I don't know why.
Thanks for your input.

i think you should take spanish.
cuz i always thought it was good to show commitment by taking a language all 4/5 years
for me, i wanted to take japanese 1 this year but then decided it was best to take spanish 2
i thought about taking both too.. but i think it'll be too much of a hassle.
if you think you can handle it though, maybe you should??
anyways, good luck with forecasting =]

hmm well if you take both thay would be quite a load.
I think you should take what you would like better
because thinking about it I can't decide.
In my opinion I would take chinese because
I would probably enjoy it more xD.

if the mandarin class is going to be easy since you speak cantonese, i think you should go for it.. that's what i did...i'm a junior and in spanish iii honors but i talked about it with my guidance counselor and he explained to me pretty much how pointless it is since i'm not going to have a job speaking spanish or anything...already having done three years should show that you're consistent but it's also going to show that you can handle another language. plus, i know these are just high school classes and whatnot but think about what you think will be more useful.
you can show off lol ...4 languages (!) ^__^

seeing as either mandarin & cantonese
will soon become an international language
i think you should learn mandarin
cover all bases i suppose ^^;
when you travel around the world, most people will either know one, or more of the following:
english, canto, mando, french
taking mandarin will ensure you that you'll never get lost in a foreign country ^^
... unless you go somewhere where everyone speaks only french... not likely though

Well, as a native Spanish speaker, I think Mandarin was a blast! I loved it! Not half as boring as my Spanish classes. I'm going to take it again next semester!
So I'd go with Manadarin. But that's just me.

I would go with mandarin, but if you live in california, spanish could come in handy

Are you allowed to choose both?
I'm Cantonese also and i go to Mandarin School on Saturdays and take Spanish classes at school (mandatory)
Cantonese and Mandarin aren't too different, you'll do fine juggling the 2 languages since you speak Cantonese
Though, you might have a bit of trouble in the writing part in Chinese assuming you don't know how to write in Mandarin, the problem I find is the proper grammar part when your brain tries to translate and switch from Cantonese to Mandarin
or mixing up the two different pronouciations (very different from eachother so i doubt it)
so, go for it
it might be a challenge but it's well worth it
