I personally have 100pack spindles of both (much of my money is wasted on blank media sad.gif )
For modern drives and readers they are identical. Capacity, speed, reliablity. But some old drives only read one format -r or +r and this is where +R excells. They have a drive utility that can set the booktype to DVD-ROM so all readers can read it.
DVD-rs seem to work everywhere already so I don't see any loss.

certain burners can only burn DVD+R and certain burners can only burn DVD-R and certain burners can both play

certain DVDplayers can play DVD+R only, certain players can play DVD-R only , and certain players can play both

Therefore, check your dvd player ( including the one on your compouter) to see if it is compatablie smile.gif

Well it really depends for compatibility purposes DVD-R would be your best bet if you are unsure whether or not your DVD player will support one format or another. Although I do highly recommend you get quality media such as Verbatim, MCC or Taiyo Yuden DVDRs to avoid any improper burns or encodes. smile.gif

I've burned 2 stacks of 100 Verbatim DVD+Rs without a problem and here is the link if you ever should need it...

I think Sony invented DVD+R and Toshiba invented DVD-R if not those companies, it was something like that. The companies said whee MY format is better. rolleyes.gif

It will be the same with BluRay and HDdvds. Sony has BluRay, Someone else has HDDvds. Which is better? They are both the size of DVDs, but hold 36gbs. I think they can go multi layers and store even more. BUT they have 2 formats completely incompatable with each other... Its not like DVD+ and - Rs anymore.

DVD-Rs more compatible, DVD+Rs cheaper.

Something like that, cept nowadays it don't matter much. All work on old DVD player (just not extremely old ones). And blank DVDs are pretty cheap now.

woah, 36 GB on one single layer side? i heard of bluray from the PS3 specs but didn't know it held that much... i certainly hope there's some sort of fault tolerance thing happening in that technology... i mean DVDs were a lot more sensitive to dirt and damage than CDs... now with 36 GB, a scratch could mean a lot of corrupt data...

+R's used to be more expensive than -R's. Now they're usually the same price

Blu-ray technology is far superior than that of HD-DVDs, reason being that Blu-ray discs can hold as much as 100GB last time I checked. I'm sure by now it has exceeded that and when I left off Sony was hoping to achieve 200GB Blu-ray discs.

TDK develops 100GB Blu-ray disc...

BluRay and HDDVDs are actually DVDs with more space right? Or am I wrong?
It would be nice to have a disc which can has that much space but it's definitely expensive. I've never seen any in Malaysia yet.

the prices are debatable bc of branding. i usually see +r's a few dollars more.

personally, i've found -r's to be alot more compatible w/everything i use. my ps2 doesn't read +r's very well, if at all.

-/+ are written and read differently as well. if youve got older dvd systems and such, you'll most likely find + works for you.

So, when in doubt of which to buy, it's best to get the DVD-R?

I think the difference is still speed. Hard drives can spin a LOT faster than CDs
