I know it's not safe to put a female and male dog together, but what would be the answer if they have large age gap? And what if the female dog is on heat? She's a chihuahua (named Poppy) and currently 8 years old, the male dog is only 3 month (can't say his breed, but what I know for sure is that he's mixed. If this helps, he is a tad bigger). Let's call him Maxson. He is a extremely busy-body, he makes trouble atleast 10 times a day. If he's bored, he runs off to Poppy and starts annoying her and they would end up in a fight. I guess I can give it a break because he's a young and a boy, but can't say I'm relieved. When Poppy is on heat, she don't discriminate her breed mate, whether it's a female, she just longs for the baby. I had trouble before because she kept on trying to breed my female dog and they're the same sex. It got on my nerves and I'm afriad she'll do that again. I need to keep extra eye on them, keeping dogs are so tough.

Edit; topped a page with my embarassing post, rofl.

what kind of flea medicine do you guys use? i use hartz ultraguard plus. my cousin just told me that hartz is a really bad brand and that it could kill my dog or something

It's a waste of money as it is hardly effective and can make your dog sick or even kill it, yes.

Get Poppy spayed. By leaving her intact she is causing you to worry like this and also setting her up for reproductive tract cancer. For future reference, it is best to spay a female before her first heat cycle. At 4 months your male puppy can be neutered, also.

Honey.bee ~~agree with a-e-t...but if you're worried about spaying Poppy at her age (I think she is considered a 'senior')--talk to your vet. They don't just look at age of an animal--they need to know their general health, too. If for some reason you can't spay Poppy--you can definitely have Maxson neutered. It won't hurt him, and it does prevent male dogs from getting certain things like testicular cancer /enlarged prostate and related things.

Is your other female spayed?

Our puppy is a busy-body too. lol Puppies are. She likes chewing things up the best. -.- Our cat is really tolerant though--she doesn't even mind if the puppy pokes her once in a while----as long as it's not in the tail end. Then Orla gets a hard whack in the face.

No, don't use the Hartz. >< We used natural/organic stuff for years--but it stopped working after a while, or didn't work at all. I guess the fleas became immune. My mother never wanted to use anything else but the safest stuff, but after a bad year of fleas, we decided to talk to our vet about Advantage, because we didn't want to give them any anti-flea pills either; we were desperate for something to work (even tried brewer's yeast + garlic, which others had told us had worked for them). Female parent was worried about the dogs, because they were light-colored, and they are more sensitive to everything medication-wise, at least in our breed (not really sure about any others). We tried it, and it worked really well. We put it on the cats too. No one was sick from it, and that was the most important thing.

There is one natural thing that works, even though it sounds funny: they're microscopic worms called predatorial (or beneficial) nematodes. They eat a lot of bad things, including mosquito and flea larvae. Since we had that flea problem, we get them every year, and I spray the whole backyard, including the surrounding areas outside the fence. The dogs picked up the fleas in the yard from other animals that would come in the yard, including neighbor cats. The dogs kindly shared them with the cats (who never went out), and that's how the problem started. The neighbor cats still come in, and we get whatever wild things, but since I've been spraying the yard--no fleas. We get them at the feed/farm store in our area, and they aren't expensive. They're totally safe to use around anything, including kids and other animals.

Looks like she's just being playful, but it could also mean that she's taking your hands/foot/arm as toys that she can swipe at and play with. Or she's biting to show that she is displeased with whatever you're doing to her - maybe you've done too much petting and she's had enough so that's her way of telling you to stop. The next time you play with her, watch what triggers the biting response and then correct it. For example, you can tell her very firmly "NO" as soon as you notice she's about to lunge at you. Or squirt a bit of water at her to deter her. Redirect her attention to another toy so that she's kept occupied with it rather than focusing on your limbs.

As for matted fur, you can either wait for it to fall off or use a letter opener to nick at it, or snip it off. Cats are sensitive about their coats and won't like foreign objects, so you need to first get your cat used to brushing - try and do it regularly and in short periods, reassure her while you're at it so she learns not to fear the brush. If you use the letter opener or have to snip it off, do make sure you have someone helping you to hold the kitty steady lest she bolts and gets hurt while you're nicking the matted fur.

i think you're right with the petting, like yesterday she was in one of those playful moods and her eyes were so big... so she started to bite my leg, but when i turned she ran away... haha, it's really cute. but i think that maybe she might be irritated about the petting as well, because i'll pet her and she'll turn around and stare at my hand for a long time before looking away. or like, she'll try to bite my hand when i am petting her... it seems rare when the does lunge though, usually she's really relaxed and stuff.

i'm afraid if i cut the fur myself, i'll cut her skin? because i felt a very big one yesterday, and i sort of tried to feel where it was, and i could feel her skin... when i went to the vet, he told me not to cut it myself because that's how a lot of cats go to the emergency room since they get cuts from their owners trying to cut the matted fur out. xD; but she's slowly getting used to brush, but she still doesn't like being held down for too long.

i have another question if someone can answer it?

my cat is starting to claw the furniture really badly. and like, her nails are super long now but when i try to touch her paws she moves them away. last night, she tried clawing at my dad's speakers, and actually got stuck because her claws are so long... so what should i do? how do i prevent her from scratching stuff and cutting her nails?

also... she always seems to be hungry. o_O like i feed her so many times a day, wet food AND dry food. so i don't know what else to do... she's always meowing and stuff... and last night i found she stuck her head in the dry food bag... =_=

Yeah, if you're worried you'd accidentally hurt your kitty, then I suggest you either enlist your vet's help the next time you visit, or you go to a professional pet groomer and get him/her to remove the matted fur. Cats never like being held down, for whatever reason tongue.gif

As for clawing... do you have a scratching post for your cat? Have you started training her to use the post? If not, do get a sturdy one that doesn't fall over so that she can relieve her scratch urges on the post instead of your dad's speakers. Don't teach kitty how to scratch - this was a fatal mistake I made with my first post and it took ages for my cat to start clawing away at the second one (in the meantime, I have tattered cardboard boxes and wounded chair legs to show for). You can try to rub some catnip on the post so that she may be attracted to the scent and start scratching it.

While she gets used to the post, you should actively divert her attention from the furniture or speakers when she shows signs of wanting to claw at them (same way you'd get her not to bite your foot). Cover the speakers up at the very least or put them out of reach of your kitty.

There are a couple of articles on how to get your cat using the scratching post:
http://www.catscratching.com/
http://www.xmission.com/~emailbox/tips.htm

Food-wise... how old is your cat? If she's still very young, three to four small meals throughout the day is fine since kittens can't eat a lot at any one time. However, if she's older than six months, then twice a day (suitable amount per feeding) is good. I know how cats can seem that they're hungry by constantly meowing, but don't always indulge them because then it'll be a bad habit and you'd be over-feeding the cat. Set fixed meal times so that your kitty knows that beyond those times, she's not supposed to be begging for food. Be firm on that. Always provide fresh water, but I'm sure you know that already. smile.gif

): i guess that's why. i don't have a scratching post, because my mom thought it would be useless to buy one. we only have one of those cheap mats, which she used for a bit... but i saw her clawing at the wall, which is a bit damaged now. like some wood pieces are hanging off, so i guess i should go get a scratching post this weekend. ^^

so thanks again for that!

my cat is five-years-old, and she keeps meowing. i feed her a mix of wet and dry food in the morning, when i get up (which is around six, on weekdays... and my mom feeds her by seven on weekends) and then like when i get home after school, she'll like meow as if she's dying! like she'll follow you and jump on tables, meowing for food. or like, she'll stick her head in the bag, and try to eat it from there.

so i should feed her two times a day? because i think my mom feeds her at most four or five... (wow, that seems like a lot LOL)

i also have another problem... haha, it seems like i have a lot of problems. but she keeps wanting to go outside, and i don't think i want her to be an indoor/outdoor cat. i live in the city, and the place i live in has a lot of cars passing by. so i'm afraid if i let her out, she'll get hit by a car. there's also a huge stray cat in the neighborhood, and a dog next door... so i don't know what to do.

like she's gotten out a few times already, and like she'll come back... but, is it a good idea for her to be an outdoor cat too?

I suppose an occasional treat of more food wouldn't hurt. My kitty is also five years old and has been known to meow for a bit of supper. I give about two to three tablespoons of food per feed for my cat, who's a pretty big cat, so that makes it two or three feeds per day. The supper, if any, is of course a smaller serving. I'm not sure how much you give your cat each time, but since there's a big time difference between her breakfast and dinner, maybe it doesn't hurt to give her a little bit when you get home from school in the afternoon and push back the dinner to around 8pm?

As for the indoor/outdoor debate... since where you live is heavy traffic, I suggest you keep your cat indoors. You should also get her a collar (if she doesn't have already) with her name and your contact details, and get her microchipped (quick procedure at the vet's). This is just a bit of extra protection in case she slips out and doesn't come back. It's not so much other cats or the dog, it's that cars don't care about cats wandering about and it can be dangerous for the kitty. Some people walk their cats (you can get a cat leash at the pet shop), but not all cats enjoy being walked. Personally I won't feel that it is safe enough to let my cat out if I live in a high-traffic area. I know it's hard to resist all that meowing but if you're determined to keep her indoors and safe, then in time she will learn to adjust. Spend more time with her and be sure to take precautions before you leave the house so that she can't slip out. You will also need to enlist the full cooperation of all your family members to keep your cat indoors.

I have a portuguese water dog and he's very cute! His name is Echo, he's 7 years old and that's him ^^

This morning, I was sleeping when I heard him crying, which was unsual. So I got up and started to look for him, saying his name (to which he didn't respond and just kept crying) so when I found him in my mother's bedroom, he was lying in her bed and was sleeping. Poor doggie was having a bad nightmare so I woke him up and cuddled with him smile.gif

That was my story haha it happened today!

I was wondering what brands of dog food do you guys feed your dogs.
I read that their food should be changed periodically to avoid allergies and too much of certain ingredients.
Switched to natural balance for awhile now and my dog loves it, but I also read that their new formula is making dogs puke so I was thinking of changing to another brand. Any recommendations? I have a chihuahua and she's 1 year old btw.

i got a yorkie/pom & he's around 5 months old.. its SO hard to potty train him! we let him sleep in his cage so in the morning, we would take him to the bathroom & place him on the pad to pee. this is the only time he would pee on the pad. we even tried the puppy training spray thing. other times, he would pee wherever he pleases, the living room, in front of the other bathroom or in the bedroom. we do bring him to the pad after he peed elsewhere but the pad.. but it doesnt work :[. he would only poop in either of the 2 bathroom we have, but he never pees on the pad >:(. & he likes to pee on every carpet there is in the bathrooms & kitchen...

& oh, we do clean/ deodorize the spot he peed at so he wont go back..

how did you potty train your puppy? :/
my chihuahua learned to pee on the pad quite fast.. but this yorkie/pom doesnt learn D;

another question:
how do you guys "punish" your puppy when he misbehaves?

Mine is a 7 month old Siberian Husky.I got her at 3 months old and she was potty trained in 3 days.I don't know if this method will work for you.

Whenever she pees/poop on the floor,I'll get newspaper or tissue paper or just something that could absorb the pee and then place it in her tray(the place where she is supposed to go).Everytime she pees at the wrong place,I'll stop her immediately and then carry her to the tray.If she pees at the right place,I'll immediately give her a treat but if she pees at the wrong place,I'll scold her.Soon, she'll learn that if she pees at the right place, she'll be rewarded and get a negative reaction when she doesn't.We also used a disinfectant (Dettol) to clean up whenever she peed on the floor. She doesn't seem to like that smell,so she doesn't go back.

When my puppy misbehaves,we cane her.I used to fence her up and segregate her from the rest of the family to punish her but she just sleeps in there after sometime,so it didn't work.

It took me about 3 months to get our puppy fully trained. >< It's the longest it's ever taken with any of our puppies. It's because the breeders weren't home enough, so they were allowed to relieve themselves on a huge heavy-duty piece of plastic in the house. =.= She knew she shouldn't do it after a few accidents, but she just couldn't help it. Training pads wouldn't have helped because they make big puddles. It was harder to clean the solid stuff--when it wasn't solid. -.- I used a lot of paper towels and rags, and gallons of Nature's Miracle. She went out when we woke up, a bunch of times during the day, after eating/before we went to bed. I made a big deal out of it when she did it outside (made her very happy. =p )The first couple of weeks we had her, she would wake me up really early to go out, and she did that for about 3 weeks. Then she started sleeping longer. She still gets me up a little early sometimes, especially if she didn't want to go out before going to sleep.

Punishing her isn't easy, also because the puppies didn't have a lot of supervision, so they were allowed to do stuff like rip up paper and cardboard when they weren't playing with each other and their toys. We try to be more understanding becuase she just didn't know not to do these things. It sounds like normal puppy behavior, but she does do it a lot (she can get stuff of the kitchen table too ><). At least I managed to get her to stop jumping up and putting her feet on the stove. When my dad and I went to get her, she was doing it there, and no one told her not to. >< She is a good dog, but when she's bad she's really bad. lol It's like having 3 puppies instead of just her. The only thing we can do is tell her NO and make a lot of noise with rolled-up newspapers or magazines, which she doesn't like because the noise is loud and sharp, and hope someday she grows out of the bad stuff. =x

congrats on new puppy ^^ I think the most important thing is that you have to have a TON of patience, especially if you've never had a pet before. There's some stuff posted in the thread that will help you--along with advice, there's a list or 2 of what your puppy, or any other pet should never eat. Many things are poisonous, and some aren't so obvious. >< Another very important thing is a good vet. They're hard to find sometimes.

When my puppy misbehaves,we cane her.I used to fence her up and segregate her from the rest of the family to punish her but she just sleeps in there after sometime,so it didn't work.

laugh.gif i do everything you just stated. haha. but it doesnt work -__-.

my puppy rips up everything..... and when he has something he's not suppose to have.. he runs & hide >:[. i was showering one time & he unraveled the whole toilet paper roll by tip toeing.. i was so mad. even if i yell NO & smack his butt, he's vicious. my housemate scared him with a blowdryer though -__-.

i feel like taking him to training school.... but some people say its not worth it

Is your puppy even food motivated? Mine is extremely food motivated,so she'll do anything to get food.Maybe you can find something that your puppy will go crazy about to train him.

If he has to pee or poop I'm sure he'll let you know by waking you up. Usually when they start to cry and wake up in the middle of the night and you don't know whats wrong, its usually means he has to go. I, too, was afraid that something like that may happen, but I had my new puppy for a week now and he just cries to wake me up and I would take him outside where he goes with ease. So far I haven't had any accidents. I don't think you'll have a problem with him doing his business on your bed since he knows where to go.

I have a question: What age is it appropriate for a puppy to have its first bath?
I've been getting mixed answers. Some people say wait 7-8 weeks and others say wait 3-6 months. So, I don't know what to go by. As of right now he's 8 weeks.

i got a yorkie/pom & he's around 5 months old.. its SO hard to potty train him! we let him sleep in his cage so in the morning, we would take him to the bathroom & place him on the pad to pee. this is the only time he would pee on the pad. we even tried the puppy training spray thing. other times, he would pee wherever he pleases, the living room, in front of the other bathroom or in the bedroom. we do bring him to the pad after he peed elsewhere but the pad.. but it doesnt work :[. he would only poop in either of the 2 bathroom we have, but he never pees on the pad >:(. & he likes to pee on every carpet there is in the bathrooms & kitchen...

& oh, we do clean/ deodorize the spot he peed at so he wont go back..

how did you potty train your puppy? :/
my chihuahua learned to pee on the pad quite fast.. but this yorkie/pom doesnt learn D;

another question:
how do you guys "punish" your puppy when he misbehaves?

When my dog was a puppy he did pee on the pads for the first weeks, then it started to get messy and the pads were pretty much useless because he would miss or he would just pee near it and I would end up having to mop it up, it was horrible mellow.gif

Have you thought about having him do his business outside and outside only? This way he knows that he isn't supposed to pee inside the house and you won't have to clean up his pee laugh.gif

My family started to take him out frequently once we think that he needs to pee or its about time.(You'll learn around what times that your pup needs to go later, but in the beginning take him out more) We would ask or tell him, "Outside pee pee?" and he would stand in front of the door waiting for one of us to open it. We had been really consistent and he quickly learned that he should do his business outside, and he now he would hold in his bladder until he goes outside.

By taking him outside, I don't mean that you have to go on a walk or something, I just walk a few steps away from the house around the bushes and trees to let him sniff around and do his business, and after he pees we praise him. It just takes about a minute or two for him to pee, because he knows that's. what he's supposed to do.

And my punishments were usually a slap on the butt. And a big NO

I think one of my kittens has Cheyletiella mites.
The skin on his head, ears and half of his back have dandruff and is really rough/scaly when i touch it.
He's always scratching himself too. And he's been losing hair. Poor baby sad.gif

I've been keeping him in a small cage so he doesn't infect my other cat and dog.
I only let him out when my other pets aren't in the room.
He's very affectionate and he loves to sleep on my lap or on my bed.
But since he got mites, i can't touch him or play with him anymore.

My sister got a skin infection from the mites too. She's got a rash on her stomach, where my kitty usually rests, so we figured she got it from him.

I've already given him a bath with a flea and tick shampoo to get rid of the mites, cleaned his surroundings and such.
I don't know if it's working, his skin condition hasn't seem to improved. I might try Frontline tomorrow.

What else should i do? I can't take him to the vet for check up because it's so frikken expensive especially the medicines they have there! It's such a rip off. sad.gif And there's only one vet in town.
I've already asked around the pets stores but they don't seem to know anything.
Plus my mom wouldn't help me pay for the expenses since she doesn't like it that i have cats,
she wants me to throw it away.

One another note: is pyrethrin dangerous for cats? Cause the flea and tick shampoo i bought has pyrethrin on it. I read somewhere that it's dangerous for cats. D;
Let's be NOTHING, i heard it lasts FOREVER.
