IM SOOOOO FREAKING MAD

that we (asians) get so llittle representation in Hollywood,

white people are viewed as diverse because there are alot of whites on TV

asians get pidgeonholed and categorized , stereotyped alot and much of it is because

there are so few asian faces in american media...

that when americans see one or two they base their judgement o Asians based on that one or two persons.

with this said im SO FURIOUS that they barely show asian actresses and when they do

they put out ones that look like THIS!!

Im not trying to be mean but its really damaging for asian progresssion that we dont get
any positive representation.

we are either portrayed as silent (kelly hus role in xmen was silent, she dint speak

devon aokis role in sin city was silent she didnt speak,

the chinese lady from joyluck club was in the new007 movie and she didnt speak)

or we are portrayed as unattractive

CMON!!!!!!! AMERICA START PUTTING SONG HYE KYO ON UR MAGAZINES!

She looks very pretty!
But, I can't believe Marie Claire would post up a shot of her with that facial impression.
I mean she's awesome and everything but another shot of her with a more appealing fashion would have been lots better.

woooow I understand your point. I agree with you!!! Sometimes people will come up and think that all asian people are a certain way.

This is a little off-topic, but I get annoyed when Japanese people constantly get played by non-Japanese people. There are so many that don't look very asian, and so it's soooo maddening when hollywood finds someone more "asian-looking" to play them...Hollywood just has this Effed up idea of how asian people are supposed to look, talk, etc.

Why are the cool asian movies almost ALL remade???? The good ones just *have* to be remade. I got so annoyed at the Oscars when The Departed kept winning...like wtf? Why didn't the original movie make it big here then??? Why does it only have to be good if it has white people?
If Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon can be played and make a big box office hit, then I think Infernal Affairs can be good here as well.
Did you guys hear how at one point the announcer said the departed was based on a Japanese movie??? My parents thought they must have missed it somewhere, 'till I reminded them that Noooo, it is a Cantonese movie.

Grrrr, grrr, but yea....I get your point.

On the up side, at least someone asian ended up on the cover of Marie Claire....

umm...i think you're blowing things way out of proportion...what's wrong with sandra oh? what's wrong with zhang ziyi? what's wrong with yunjin kim? i think they're all beautiful...and looking at the present from the past, the progression of asian american women portrayed in the american media has been huge...and it's not about the looks....it's about talent!...i'd rather have unattractive but intelligent and talented women representing asian americans....yea it hurts that people stereotype asians based on little evidence but what do you expect? the american media is full of crap in general...

all in all...i'm pretty offended that you called sandra oh unattractive...i find her beautiful..PLUS..she's on the cover of a magazine!!! still think asian americans are under-represented???

and also, junjihyun will be debuting in america soon and america has already accepted the popularity of the korean media by remaking Il Mare and My Sassy Girl and also by recognizing our popularity in other major asian countries...let's just be glad with what's already going on instead of asking for more...stop looking at the downfalls....they're really not worth emphasizing

well i don't think american magazines will start putting song hye gyo on their covers anytime soon... unless she debuts in america and people in america actually know who she is. there's a reason celebrities are on covers. because famous celebrities sell. unknown actresses like song hye gyo wouldn't sell magazines. sandra oh's popular now after grey's anatomy. but i do have to admit, i saw pictures from that photoshoot and they were ... not that pretty.

there are a lot of asians in hollywood. true, there aren't as many as other races... but still. i think you're not giving hollywood enough credit.

hopefully once jeon ji hyun debuts in america, Asians will have a better reputation.

Sandra Oh is probably one of the well-known Asian actress in US today, so why not? Except They should pick pic with better face expression ^^;;

p/s Kelly Hu kicks arse in X-Men movie, just let the action do the talk.

Zhang Ziyi is cute.

but she doesnt get much exposure, and when she does shes usually doing stereotypical asian roles of karate chopping
or being a submissive geisha girl to a white man.

YES Asian americans are under represented. are u kidding me? we get one big magazine cover every 5 years and its sandra oh??

where is the progresion of asian americans ?? where???

just take alook at the comments about her on this site

http://www.bastardly.com/archives/2007/03/...7-marie-claire/

^^ they make alot of racist comments. and the fact that alot of people hate asians in america PROVES that asians are under represented and get faced with really bad stereotypes

we need as many beautiful asian people to infiltrate holllywood so that people will start to see us as we truely are.
a DIVERSE group.

so that people will shed their preconceived ideas about asians. Sandra Oh is NOT helping that cause with that picture.
she is an embarassment to asians. she probably set us back like 20 years with that pic

...But she's on the cover of Marie Claire.
And she's pretty. (Go Grey's Anatomy! Hahaha)
Although, it is kind of a strange facial expression... o_O

Putting SHK on an American magazine cover would be... awkward. She doesn't speak English? <-- nevermind, I take that back. I see Asian magazines with Americans on them >_>

Also, your argument isn't exactly based off of this image, is it?

People are judging based on this picture? Where? >_>

*edit

On the site, it seems like people are only saying Sandra Oh is ugly, not Asians in general. *sigh* That's horrible, she's not ugly =/

isnt Sandra Oh Korean-Canadian? ah, just technicalities, I guess.

I must admit it's not her most pleasing pics; but she looks very happy in it. I dont think it meant to show her as unattractive, if I'm understanding your implication. I think the cover's trying to show that fun side of Sandra. unfortunately, it didn't quite showcase her beauty. that's my perception on it. take it for what its worth.

edit: I went to the site/gossip blogs. basically, it reeks of ignorance. oh well.

i just read the comments on that site you posted. frankly, i think you're blowing things out of proportion too. there will always be negative comments made about any celebrity. seriously. go to any celebrity gossip site and you'll see tons of negative comments regarding the person. and there seems to be a lot of positive comments regarding sandra oh and asians in general on that site. stop being so negative and try to look at the brighter side of things. *eseul is right.. the negative stuff just isn't worth emphasizing.

UM HELLO!!!!!!!!

not to be RUDE but GEEZ.

BE LOGICAL HERE.

SONGHYEGYO ON MARIE CLAIRE?
first of all. songhyegyo hasnt even debuted in the states yet.

to be on a cover of ANY magazine (ESP renowned ones such as marie claire),
you cant just be PRETTY.
you have to have TALENT. you have to be respected.

only asians would recognize songhyegyo on that cover. O_______O
what would they interview her on? her korean dramas?
songhyegyo is TOP in korea. not in america dear.

and WHATS WRONG WITH SANDRA OH?
she may not be HOT or appealing at first
but she definately has charisma and acting skills.
americans love her. she has spunk and a personality that viewers love.
maybe NOT EVERYONE but honestly, who doesnt have haters?

she has done an outstanding job in grey's anatomy.

SO I HAVE TO TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH YOU. smile.gif
gooo sandra!!!

i think that's a nice picture of Sandra Oh.
you have to realize that non-asians have different 'tastes' for asians...
song hye gyo may be drop dead gorgeous through asian eyes
(although i'm asian and dont find her that pretty), she may not be through non-asian eyes.

when non-asians think of asians, they normally think of the
authentic asian face- the nondouble eyelid face... and they find it more attractive.

yes, asians are under-represented, but hey... you have to realize
that America is still primarily a 'white man' society.
it's sad, but true. asians are a minority... and to make much profit,
magazines have to target the majority.

actually, i find sandra oh to be very attractive. at first... i did not think so. she has small eyes and looks like the way a american view asian people to look like. however, she is a fantastic actress, has won a golden globe for her acting in grey's anatomy which is a veryyy popular show. also she played a awesome role in sideways. isnt this enough to win her a cover of a well known magazine? i mean, honestly, song hye kyo is beautiful and gorgeous... but those anyone know her here? i dont think so. you cant complain that about her not being on the magazine because she isnt known... people dont buy magazines about people that they dont know about. and i totally agree that asians are underrepresented in the hollywood industry but give it time. who knows what could happen. anyways i just think you are being irrational about sandra oh being on the cover. she's fantastic at her job and she deserves it.

I think you soooooo posted in the worng section.

I fully understand where you're coming from since Asian actors are highly underrated but there are popular known actors. Sandra's not the only mainstream Asian actress and like all of those actresses you've pointed out, in other movies they do have speaking roles like Kelly Hu had a huge role in the Scorpion King, Devon Aoki is more known as a supermodel and had a bigger role in 2 Fast 2 Furious, and don't forget other famous actresses like Lucy Liu, Zhang ZiYi, Gong Li and etc. I think Sandra's beauty is unique which everyone is. Beauty doesn't have to be superficial, Plus Song Hye Kyo? Yes she's gorgeous but Sandra isn't? That's a tad bit rude dry.gif. She happens to encourage every fellow asian actors to keep pursing the dream to making it big too!

because first of all asian women arent necesarily viewed as "Attractive" in america
in the first place

we need to DESTROY that stereotype that we all have really small eyes and flat faces

sandra oh is like a walking stereotype

shes not helping the cause.
