Basically, I'm already 17 and I still don't have a permit. This is only because I'm under the assumption that it costs less money if I get the permit when I'm 17 than when I get it when I'm 16. Someone told me that once I'm 17 years old, I don't have the take the 6-hour driving lessons, but I can still get my permit after paying a small fee. Is this true? Because right now, I can't afford $300+ on driving lessons.

Can someone tell me how this process works? And where I have to go to get my permit?

EDIT: I live in New Jersey.

you can get your learners permit without taking drivers ed.
or at least in Massachusetts thats how it is, over here you take drivers ed so you can get your actual lisence before the age of 18, and taking drivers ed also gives a lower rate for insurance.
a lie never lives to be old.

It depends on where you live. In California, you don't need driver training/education once you're 17 and a half to get a permit.

in tx, if youre under 18 and dont want to take drivers ed.. you can sign up for parent taught. basically you get these forms with schedules which you fill in the dates of when your parent teaches you from the book/packet. you fill those out & bring some other forms to the DMV, then you take the test for the permit.

thats what i did.

i guess it varies with each state. i'm from massachusetts and you don't have to take driving lessons to get your permit. maybe i'm wrong but i don't think that you need to take driving lessons before getting your permit in any state. it doesn't really make sense if that was the case. how would you even take driving lessons without a permit? you're not allowed to operate a vehicle unless you've passed a written permit test.

i think you are getting the permit and license mixed up. normally if you are under 18 (I guess in your state, it is 17?) you have to take a driver's ed course before you can get your license but to take driver's ed you are required to get a permit beforehand or else the instructor won't allow you to even drive their car.

to get a permit, just go to your local rmv and ask for a driver's manual and a form for getting a driver's permit. read through the manual. look over the form to see what identification you need and how much the fee will be for the permit test. when you are ready, go back to the rmv with your formed filled and all the identification you need plus the fee required.

Yea that is right. In Jersey, at 17 all you need to do is pass the permit test and then after you pass it you can go directly to the DMV to get your eyes checks, and from there you can get your permit. You can either take your permit test in school or at the DMV. I took my permit test at school. You need to at obtain an eighty to pass the permit test. Also at 17 you don't need to take the 6 hours driving lesson. But you do need 6 months of adult (the person must have at least 3 years of driving experience) supervision driving, before you get you license. I just got my permit @ 17, three months ago.

When you do to the DMV you need to bring your school ID, Social security #, school transcripts, a document that state you are a resident of the US (something like that, I use my birth certificate) and the card that states you pass the permit test. (You need to follow the 6 points thing) The fee is 10 dollars. And after that you can drive home with whom ever that drove you there, with you as the driver if you want. smile.gif

Is it okay if the school transcript is an unofficical one?
And what is a 6-points thing?

LOL Sorry, I'm so confused.

Your school transcript is your class schedule. You must show the classes you are taking at your school, and you also need to bring your school ID.

Here is the link for the six points thing.
