one of the top public schools in the nation(this is coming from a michigan state university student, umich's biggest rival)
they're business school is premier too (undergrad, and graduate level)
was thinking about transferring to their business school (ross) but with the statistic that only 2 or 3 transfers were admitted last year, i decided not to.

although i'm not going into their business school, i just recently got back from a campus visit and i am DEFINITELY going there next year. the atmosphere of the school is GREAT (so are the academics); the school is pretty diverse, too. it's just great; i'm still in lala land from my visit.

i'm very excited for next year biggrin.gif

i wish i could say more about the business program but >_< i don't know much. if you go to one of their campus day things you yourself can ask the business students whatever you want. Ross is a wonderful business school (ranked #1 by businesweek this year), and from what i recall, as long as you do the prerequisites and keep up the gpa (3.6ish is the average), then you'll be admitted into the school your sophomore year --> according to the Ross students on campus day.

BIG classes, especially for first-years. i mean bigbigbig. i thought lectures with 350+ students were the norm for college education, but... not really, i guess?

i think it's pretty close to the stereotypical college experience. like pretty campus with ivy-covered buildings and a big student square with lots of kids in backpacks milling around... football games... coffee shops everywhere... almost everyone dorms freshman year at least... lots of opportunities to get involved with work or research or student groups on campus... liberal atmosphere... i mean i don't know what kind of information you're looking for. i don't know much about the b-school at all. but this is what i remember and miss about my days at umich. so yeah smile.gif

Haha wow ppl really love UMich. I'm graduating in a couple weeks from the B-School and LSA (joint degree). There were a lot of amazing professors, but the classes aren't as good at preparing you for the 'real world' like Wharton's program. I actually found all of the classes to be really easy; they're just super ridiculously competitive. UMich's B-School is ranked very highly, especially some of the individual concentrations... but gotta be honest, in the business world Ross graduates are known to be willing to take the lower upper management jobs. Granted, there are a lot of ppl who are offered stellar jobs comparable to those regularly offered to Wharton graduates, but for the most part, the starting salary and benefit gap is HUGE. But mind you, I'm comparing two business programs at the top of the top tier! (I keep talking about Wharton b'cuz I was also accepted there, and I am close with many ppl that were/are a part of that program. And.. I'm from Philly haha.)

Michigan is a huge school, and a good percentage of the courses you take over your college career will be lectures. You'll earn what you put into it. I know a couple genius-level students who are on academic probation all the time b'cuz they just don't go to class.

Anyway, I really loved going to a big school, especially a football school. It's truly a different experience. I was born and raised in Philly, so I'm not really a huge fan of the midwest quaintness or the 9-month winter. I'm such an urban girl. smile.gif Ann Arbor gets old really fast, especially if you don't have access to a car. But the parties are awesome, and there are a lot of courses that you'll appreciate for the rest of your life. There might even be a professor who changes your entire perspective on everything. There are a TON of organizations and events you can get involved with, and you can't avoid meeting lots and lots of ppl different from yourself. I think the majority of B-School students are narrow-minded, pretentious, and too cocky. But perhaps they have a right to be. I myself love to do group projects (every member actually participates!) and DRINK with B-School ppl! (If you get into the B-School, you'll be going to Rick's and Skeepers A LOT.) But I don't make them my closest friends. I know a lot of ppl who feel the same way, but for the most part, 95% of B-Schoolers you meet will tell you that Ross B-School is the BEST with the BEST ppl lol. smile.gif

It's crazy expensive for a public school though! And the city totally screws students over in terms of off-campus housing, b'cuz students have very little say in city matters. You pay $300-650/month for a tiny room with crappy furniture. The lower end of the range usually means bunkbeds and sharing what SHOULD be a single with someone else. And $650/mo for a single on a campus in a non-metropolitan city... ugh so ridiculous!

But in the end I don't regret attending this school. I have a lot of great memories, and I'll cherish everything I'm taking away from the experience. smile.gif AND Bill Clinton is speaking at my commencement!!! biggrin.gif

I'm also a very big football nut so I'll have fun at the games! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I live in Oregon and I'm hoping that UMich is nothing like it here. I desperately need a different environment and to meet new people.
I'm going on a visit soon in May and I'm excited to feel what the atmosphere is like there!

I'm at UMich. I agree with what everyone has said so far. AA itself is pretty boring. But if you make good friends, it's a blast. AA is awesome when it's your birthday because you get tons of free stuff from different local restaurants and boutiques. Football is crazy here. I seriously hate football, but games are tons of fun. 6th row tickets in the Big House...AMAZING! I went to the commencement ceremony to see Bill Clinton (AWESOME) talk and I was trying to get people to do the wave, but I failed miserably. I guess parents aren't as into it as the students.

Anyway, back to the original question about b-school. I'm not in the b-school, but I have friends who have gotten in and who have gotten rejected. Ross is super crazy competitive to get into. You have to have good grades (3.9 GPA helps). And you have to be involved in leadership positions (student government and student organizations). It used to be a 2-year program, so you applied after your sophomore year. But now it's a 3-year program, so you apply after your freshman year. B-school itself at UMich isn't hard. It's getting in that's hard. Same with UMich's med school.

And tuition is crazy expensive. I think it's the most expensive public school for out-of-state students ($35,000+). Good thing I pay in-state tuition phew.gif

Congrats to you, rigashi!!! By the way, what color tassles do b-school students get?

ROFL you tried to do the wave?? That's AWESOME hahahah! I was soooooooooooo cold, shivering like crazy in just a dress and my grad gown in high heels like half the girls there (so so stupid.. need to plan ahead better). THANK GOD the sun came out!

Thanks for the congrats!! B-School tassle is this ugly light brown colour called "drab" or something. Luckily, I also had my LSA white one to soften it. I wish I had decorated my cap!!!

Here's pics of the tassle:
