i just went by my derm the other day, and he prescribed a low-dose birth control pill (orthotricyclen) to me simply to control/get rid of my acne... i'm not sexually active or anything, so i was wondering if this is really the right path to go?

do any of you out there take birth control SIMPLY for acne or found that it really helped your acne go away?

I dont, but i know a friend that does, it didn`t turn out that well for her. It actually made her breaky out even more.

Yeah, it helps control your hormone levels so your oil glands don't overwork themselves and stuff.
I have thought about taking birth control to control my acne as an option but right now i'm using stuff called nuskin that i got great recomendations for.

Yeah my friend uses birth control to help her acne.
To be honest though...it hasn't really helped her too much.

i dont take them, i think that some birth control pills give side effects, you start to gain wieght and you become more moody... varies from ppl to ppl though

if you become depressed or moody you need ot change pills!

o_o when i tried a new brand ug i felt so sad all the time and gross .. so i changed back to my normals and was happy again

i had no side effects, or didnt notice any at all.

It has helped me out with my skin a bit, I no longer have that many small break outs. But when it comes to the 7 days of my mensturation period, i start breaking out normally

and that wasn't my purpose to use it...i used it for one reason only and that's what birth controls are made for...lol

i really want to get off because i'm getting random pimples because of it..and i've had a pretty clear face before..aish..

Birth control can help control acne, but it varies for people.

Birth control does have side effects yes, but it is usually more common for people over 35 and people who smoke.

Taking birth control pills for years and years CAN make you infertile. It's happened to 3 of my mom's friends, but again, it varies for everyone.

Birth control, I think if you don't have to take it, I wouldn't take it. Like any medications, they give you all the warnings and things that may happen, such as blood clots, nausea, etc. Ask your doctor.

But yeah, point of this, if it doesn't work out for you, I would just switch to something else. I would not have chosen b/c as my method of acne control though, to be on the safer side.

yeah i did. before i took BC i got the big painful red deep acne all over my forehead, to the point where it hurt my face. then i took BC for about a year and ive since stopped and my skin completely cleared. now i can actually say my skin is good

she didn't really recommend it because
once you start, and you suddenly stop...
it all comes back again.. plus she said you see results in 6 months +

i'm taking them with accutane for a month now. quite worked though i don't think it's the birth control pill acting, but the accutane.
