Tell me in your own words what you think the differences between race and ethnicity are.

Please, no one tell me to look it up or post a definition from a dictionary. I can do that myself. I want to see what other people think. (You'll also be playing into my PSY119 class.)

To me, 'ethnicity' seems to be deeper than 'race'. Race feels like something really biological and factual: for example, your genetic makeup or what country you were born in. Ethnicity seems to include more personal things like culture and upbringing.

ethnicity --- includes your background, tradition, culture and like your grandparents stuff.. the country your ancestor from, etc

I think race is of traditions and cultures, and ethnicity is where you come from (chinese, korean, blahh)

I think race is what you are appearance wise = caucasion, asian, etc.

Ethnicity is what makes that. (chinese, german, etc)

Race: The more general discriptive of the two. It's most commonly the fairly outdated categories of: Asian (Mongoloid), White/Caucasians (Caucasoid), Black (negroid), etc. More based in common physical differences (skull shape, body type, etc.)

Ethnicity: The more specific one. Ethnicity is more of what you are and specifically where you came from. Countries are generally used for this one, like Japanese/Korean/Chinese, etc. and it's more deeply rooted in common culture than common physicalities.

we just covered this in my classics course

The idea of "race" creates categories of peoples based on primarily physical differences, most often imposed from an outside group. The function of race establishes an arbitrary basis for creating impermeable boundaries between people, when in fact those boundaries are quite fluid. Race pretends to be biological, when it is primarily an ideology to sustain controversial policies, such as slavery. To clarify, race allowed for a justification for slavery to take place. Before, especially in the ancient world, anyone could be enslaved. It was the result of misfortune, not the color of your skin. In fact, the word "race" itself is a fairly recent phenomenon.

Ethnicity deals with group of people with a common history--cultural/historical background. It is determined from within the group. People with the same ethnicity generally accept the same cultural norms as one another. There is also a common set of rituals where all individuals within that ethnicity have a certain level of familiarity with it.

I think Race is just the vague description like Asian, Caucasian, African, etc.

Ethnicity is deeper and more pin-point. Korea, Nigerian, Canadian, Swedish, etc. with all their custom and traditions on top of it.

Race: The color of your skin, so Black, White, Asian, Latino etc.

Ethnicity: Added with the color of your skin your culture. Even though Japanese people and Korean people look similar, we are different ethnically because of our different culture, languages, etc.

Race - African, Caucasion, Asian
Ethnicity - Hispanic, etc.

Racially, one can not be Hispanic but they can be ethnically. For example, I usually check African/African-American for "race" and Hispanic for "ethnicity". Another example would be when someone checks Asian for "race" and "Filipino" for ethnicity.

Nationality is your country of citizenship.

Ethnicity is your historic culture.

Race is the whole classification your ethnicity is in.

Hispanic is another term for ethnicity of a Spanish speaking person. I don't consider it a race.
