A dramatic series on the reign of King Henry VIII.
He was The King. Now he's going to be King Henry VIII.
The star of last year's CBS miniseries Elvis, Jonathan Rhys Meyers has begun shooting Showtime drama series The Tudors, to air in early 2007.
Showtime president Robert Greenblatt says the goal is to "breathe new life" into the Henry VIII story, offering a "younger and sexier version" of the early 1500s' King of England. "We didn't want to do another BBC historical drama. I don't say that disparagingly, but they're all done in the same kind of way." He promises beheadings and sex in the 10 episodes. "I say it's the greatest soap opera never told."
Also cast: Sam Neill, Jeremy Northam and Gabrielle Anwar. Michael Hirst (Elizabeth), series creator and executive producer, wrote the first five hours.
