Try right click a blank portion of the the task bar (where the things like IE and AIM minimize to) and click properties.
Second tab, click customize.
Under Advance tab, there is a clear recent documents button at the bottom click that.
Should clear that list for you. (http://www.ccleaner.com/ is also good for clearing things )

i keep a txt file with my favourite registry locations
here's where to turn off the documents menu
Turn off Documents Menu
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer.
Double-click on the NoRecentDocsHistory value in the right pane - if it's not there, create a new binary value by that name.
Change 00,00,00,00 to 01,00,00,00
Repeat the last two steps on the NoRecentDocsMenu value.
You'll have to restart Windows for the change to take effect.
Other handy ones are:
Turn off Picture and Fax viewer permanence
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ SystemFileAssociations\ image\ ShellEx\ ContextMenuHandlers.
Delete the ShellImagePreview key.

Turn off built-in ZIP support
Select Run from the Start Menu.
Type regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll at the prompt, and click Ok.
The change will take effect immediately, but you may have to restart Windows for all traces of the built-in ZIP support to disappear.
To turn back on... regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
Turn off Error reporting
Open System in the Control Panel (or right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.

You can disable error reporting entirely here, or enable it selectively for certain programs. Click Ok when you're done.
Turn off system messenger
Run the Services window (type "services.msc" in run dialogue).
Double-click the Messenger entry in the list.
Click Stop to close the service.
From it's properties dialogue, select Disabled from the Startup type list.
Close the Services window when you're done.
