Actually, I just entered highschool, taking all honors except for Japanese. Umm, it may look like i'm some kind of smart, A+ student, but OH MY GOSH I'M TOTALLY NOT.

And I've been doing PRETTY BAD on my tests and quizzes this first marking period. Except for a few... I got 92s, 83s.... etc. but I got a bad test grade of 67 on one subject and 73 on another subject....

sad.gif

Before I got these two tests back, I believe I had averages of about B in those 2 classes. Now what would I have? Like a D? THe marking period ends next week!

I don't think I had ever gotten such a bad grade on my report card.. EVER!

And my parents were expecting a lot from me.. They told me to NEVER drop out from honors, cause it's good..

Does ur first marking period grade determine if you're dropped from of honors or not?
AND if ur first marking period grade is bad, will colleges look down at that?

Can any of you guys share how YOU did on ur freshman yr of highschool?

Wow..so many questions. I'm sorry, I'm really worried.

I have no idea what a 1st marking period is, but if you have a D for your semester grade, then you're screwed in the future.
In freshman year, I failed a few tests and quizes in the beginning, but my grades evened out later in the semester. Freshman year (and Sophomore year) was a piece of cake if I compare it to junior year. I only had two honors classes in Freshman year (there was only two available).

Maybe you just haven't readjusted into the high school flow yet. You really need to start making a more substantial effort in high school. It's normal for freshmen to have a slight slip in their grades when they just enter high school. Throw all your effort into it and readjust your priorities, and you'll probably do better.

Don't worry, college won't see your grades from your progress report.
They only look at the final semester grade.
Depending on where you're going to apply, I think most colleges don't care about your freshman year gpa.
(I know UCs doesn't care about Freshman year. sleep.gif)

including/looking at freshman grades is true for most US schools, but i think the UCs are the exception (unless i'm wrong)

Usually freshman year is when everyone realizes they werent as smart as they thought they were. No worries everyone screws up freshmen year.

You should be worried. Thats good.

Does ur first marking period grade determine if you're dropped from of honors or not?
-> Varies in schools. Check with a knowledgeable teacher or guidance counselor.

AND if ur first marking period grade is bad, will colleges look down at that?
Depends how it is written on the transcript. Varies from school to school.

I did pretty bad and I didnt try as hard as I should have. I remember this junior telling me, DONT SCREW UP you're going to regret it and I was like yeah. And then I didnt really keep that in mind. By the end of freshman year I was like, ITS OK - its only freshman year, I can do better sophmore year - and I REALLY screwed up sophmore year - so basically the moral of my story is : DON'T SCREW UP LOL. And if you do screw up, don't screw up too much and work hard smile.gif

Get involved in ECs right away
Look for internships, do some summer programs, enter at least 10 contests : I would have done all these things if I had known. Do it freshman year smile.gif

Freshman year isn't look upon are hard as junior/senior because you're getting used to the work flow and becoming more independent.

I understand the grades slipping, but for me, that's happening right now in my sophmore ear O_O. To me, Freshman year was a breeze~ I had all Honors except for two classes (they were only advanced level). Now, I'm a Sophmore with all Honors/Pre-AP classes and um, it's kind of sucking...hard. Really hard. Yeah. >>

You say you have a D for you semester grade?? Oh honey, I don't what to tell you that'll make you feel better because that's...just really bad. But if you mean your report card (2nd marking period), I'm sure you'll be alright. I just had my first TWO Ds EVER (and I've never had less than a B before then) on my last report card so, I know how you feel.

You'll be alright, study harder. You will hate Freshman year now but when you're a sophmore/junior/senior, you'll wish you were there again. Believe me.

oh, i didn't see this part.

i did very well freshman year... 4.0 and 3.95 with four pre-ib classes. those are whats holding up my gpa now that i'm a senior laugh.gif

i mean, i didn't do poorly during jr year, but what i got lowered my cummulative, so meh.

freshman year grades are going to be the easiest ones you're going to have a chance to get, so take advantage of it while you can. you'll appreciate the effort you put into it a few years later.

aw~ okay breathe!!! it's okay... you still have 3 more years! (well technically 2) and junior year is by far the most important!!!

but still... freshman year is also important. put in more effort into your studies... this really isnt the time to be slacking off .. considering you're in high school and all.

work hard... talk to your guidance counselor about the course overload.. take a deep breath and relax. it'll be okay. you sound like a very smart girl! im sure you can pick up those grades in no time~ im assuming first marking period is like "first quarter" ? just think about how many quarters/ marking periods you have left! you still have time to pick those grades up. work hard and make the grades you're capable of! good luck!

Freshman year was horrible! I never want to go back to it as far as grades go. I mean, sure it was fun, minus the staying up late nights because I had been procrastinating on my homework and getting horrible grades.

Just try and work hard at it. I only had 2 pre-ap classes, since they were the only ones that freshmen could actually take, and yet I did horrible. It was crazy, considering the fact that my biology teacher was super hard! Since she was the biology AP teacher also, she made biology pre-ap a killer.

Just stick with it and focus! And I cannot emphasize this enough. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Whatever you do, don't.

Um, I was kind of lazy to read ALL of what everyone says, but I got a general gist. Sorry if I'm being redundant. ^^;;

Some of the people up there are right; some colleges don't really look at your freshmen year very much. The reality, however, is that they do. What colleges really like to see is how you've improved.

So let me put this in a better light: Getting all B's in your freshmen year and then all A's in the three years to follow is MUCH better than getting all A's in your entire high school career.

Now some of you may be thinking, "What!? You're so stupid, what're you talking about?"

Well, think critically. Starting out low and then coming out high shows the college that you are fully capable of improving. This is especially so as you transition from one type of schooling to another.

While you may not think much of it, improvement shows that you can easily adjust to changing environments; this almost guarantees the college that you can transition from high school to college quickly, if not right away.

Just bring your grades up, and you should be fine. =)
Still young, but I feel incredibly old. Silly me.

The only way I can contribute is to answer this question.. I really don't know about the rest.
My freshman year, I got a 4.0, NOT because I'm smart, but because I got LUCKY. ALL my teachers were really easy -__- and freshman year.. we weren't offered any honors classes.. so yeah =T

But, like others have said, UCs don't care much for freshman year grades. At my school, our transcripts have a separate "University" GPA with just grades 10-12.

first of all, unless those tests were worth like 1000 pts then i doubt you'd have a D. i've been getting D's on my chem tests and i'm still pulling off C in that class haha (damn ap chem fjslkdfj). soo don't even trip.

i think everyone else already answered that college question.

freshman year... uh i got like all A's and one B with 2 honors classes. 2 years later ahhh not too well hahah.

Procrastination.

I did okay, I believe the lowest grade I got on the report card once was a 75 for English. It didn't really count. What counts was the Cummulative grade for the third marking period in the second semester.
I had like four 90's and a few 85's and a 98 for gym. lol. That's all I remember.

Waking up at 6:00 am and sleeping at 2:00 am was a hectic for first semester especially having math for first period.

Aced it. Straight A's and all AP classes. tongue.gif Afterwards, I quit AP classes since my school doesn't stress academics much and taking AP would just make me do more stupid, worthless worksheets during the year and in summer. tongue.gif I though HS was just like elem or Jr. high... incredibly easy. But then, I'm in Oklahoma. What do we know. biggrin.gif
High school is supposed to be harder than Jr. high. AP/honors are supposed to challenge you and make you better prepared for your courses in college. Just study harder and ask your teachers if you don't understand something. It's better if you have someone you can discuss your classwork with. General rule I was taught: If you can teach it and have someone else understand, you know the material. No one is perfect. Just keep studying and focus on the key points, vocab/formulas, etc.
Best of luck!

Dude. I don't mean to scare you, but Freshman year should be the easiest out of the four.

Good luck.

Yea, in hindsight freshman year's nothing. I never stayed up later than midnight for a paper. But I started all nighters sophomore year. So as everyone says, don't procrastinate.

Anyway, colleges don't see every single quarter grade. The only see your course grade, so if you mess up a quarter, it's a good thing that colleges don't see it. But it's a killer for your cumulative GPA.

It was a bit of a reality check when I first got to high school. I was a straight A student before, but then I started getting B's. I took four honors classes as a freshman, so it was an adjustment. But I knew I just needed to put in effort. So if you think you really can do it, then go for it. Or if it's that much trouble, then drop a honors class or two. If you're getting below a B- in an honors, then I'm not sure you should stay in it.

But anyway, freshman year was so much fun. It just gets worse, so don't start to overly stress out. Try and have fun because the next time you'll get this much freedom is senior year =) Good luck!
