so is there anyone here on soompi in acadeca besides me?

i've been in academic decathlon for two years now. (The Renaissance & China)
i'm in california and my school's pretty ghetto, so not many people are into this kind of thing.
last year our school was a lost cause. we didn't study and we came home with nothing.

after what happened last year, we took it to the next level.
we studied, and our school had about 7 medals, which was actually a big surprise to us.
you would've never thought that our school would have such an outcome.

but yeah,
i was surprised since i studied for the literature portion
& i came out with a Gold medal for speech.

the past two years i've been in scholastic, since my freshmen year sucked.
but i know for sure that next year i'll be in honors.
so we'll see.

CIVIL WAR seems alright. not bad for my last year..

What exactly is Academic Decathlon?
I'm technically a high schooler (Freshman), but our district is weird and does Grades 7-9 being Junior High.
I know it's like an academic competition regarding all disciplines of academics. But how was your experiences, and like what do you need to do to get in?

DaAzNkIgGa627- its very rigourous. well, at least at my shcool it is. you have to stay after school and go to school on saturday also! its mainly reading packets of information and memorizing them. and any student can join. theres teams for A and B students. and also for C students. if you have a sport or is in asb..not good idea to join. gotta have a lot of dedication

^yeah.

Our school has the misfortune of being up agaisnt crazy LAUSD people who win the nationals virtually everytime they go -_x

Anyway I'm in it, I competed only last year because I was late for the Renaissance..

Super Quiz was fun. Teehee.

I got 2 awards - Bronze for speech & team's top scorer - and a recognition in essay.
I'm in honors, by the way.

Our school got 7 medals also..
2 gold & 1 bronze in interview
1 silver & 3 bronze in speech

Our coach is really pushing us hard so we can get recognition in other areas this year sleep.gif but he's a NEW coach and doing well.. i suppose.. lol xD

Before I came into high school, my high school had an academic decathalon team. But the teacher that sponsored it left, so now our school doesn't have one anymore. I'm pretty sad. I was really looking forward to joining.

Is it fun?

OMG I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!

Ahhh so nice to find people on soompi who're in acadeca. I recently joined this year (only because of China and Hawaii for nationals, hehe).

Our team worked our asses off for state, beating our arch rival school by less than 0.25%, and we are going to Hawaii in six days for nationals! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I'm so excited, haha.

Though with CA, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Illinois, I doubt we'll do well, but hopefully we'll get to place in our division. smile.gif

Anyone else going to nationals?

I joined this year as sophmore and our team did pretty well even though most of the people on the team totally blew off the material and I am in SuperQuiz next year (scary!) but it seems pretty fun. Our team won a couple medals but I am sure we will do great next year because a lot of people are really pepped up to win. It is crazy though how some schools are so into it.

Acadec! <3 I just joined this year (as a sophomore).

I was an alternate ;~; But I got a gold medal in literature and a silver in math. D: ..

Our school made it to states. Lol.

I think next year's topic for Superquiz is way better than this year's. Climatology, wtf?! I prefer the Civil War. At least I've learned about it in school. @_@

Next year's book is a little iffy. I liked "The Good Earth," but "The Red Badge of Courage"? eurgh. x_x

basically, if your school has an Academic Decathlon class, then you should talk to your counselor. You compete at scrimmages, regionals, or if your team is really good state and nationals. Its kinda like sports except its studying xD The prizes range from medals, trophies, money, scholarships, etc. I think its definetly worth joining and its fun, especially the superquiz

So basically, my school won Nationals again. I laughed when I read the quotes on LA Times about El Camino Real being too serious. There was a Pep Rally today on the quad. Not bad for a team that didn't even win in the City competition.

Not that it has anything to do with myself, nor should I be proud of it, since I missed out on the tryout date because I was careless and forgot when it was. Just informing! Good luck to you Acadeca-ers next year. I like your theme.
