My english class is doing a unit on poetry and we have to find a poem that we like and explain why we like it and whatnot. Sound easy enough but I haven't been exposed to a lot of poetry and am considering submitting in lyrics from one of my favorite songs. But I don't know if lyrics are considered poetry.

So I was wondering if maybe you guys could give me some insight on this. It would be greatly appreciated. biggrin.gif

And sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Sure it is.
Lyrics is only a term for words to a song.
They're all poems, they've just got music to it.

I write poems and they sometime turn into songs. Music is just a musical form of poetry so. Songs lyrics are one of the best forms of poetry. Have fun with the class!!!

YESSS.
In English class, we had to read poems out loud.
So this boy in my class wanted to read song lyrics & he proved that song lyrics were poems by looking up the definition of lyrics in the dictionary. HAHA. *shakes fist @ english teacher*

and yes i do consider song lyrics as poetry.

Some are, but not all. I don't exactly find "Sk8ter Boi" to be lyrically impressive.

Well it depends, some songs have lyrics that are trite, shallow, and most often meaningless. A song like "Silent All These Years," by Tori Amos would be a great example of a song that is more like a poem.

There's plenty of awful *real poetry* out there as well. But that's a good point to mention. Songs and poems get PUBLISHED for different reasons. Songs get made with meaningless lyrics because the music is catchy. Actually, that's all it has to be: catchy. Poems, on the other hand, cater to a specific audience and need to stand up on their own as words/literature, with no music to supplement their worth. So, what song did you pick? smile.gif

Why yes!
I actually enjoy Eminem's lyrics, and "'tis poetical."

Yes.

And if push comes to shove, you can always say it was written as a poem first, then turned into a song later

Yeah definitely but I guess it depends on what song. If it's a really meaningful and deep song then it could also be consider as poetry :) Some lyrics rhyme too just like poems. :phew:
A thousands words couldn't bring you back, I know because I tried.
Neither could a thousand tears, I know because I cried.
You left behind a broken heart, and happy memories too.
But I never wanted memories, I only wanted you.

Well, yes and no.

Lyrics can be considered as poetry. However, there are also senseless and repetitive verses in songs that shame the poetic value of songs.

Lyrics can be beautiful though and depict a deep meaning. It's almost like poetry with a melody. They may not all rhyme, but not all poems rhyme either. It's best to use your own judgement. If it evokes feelings, I'm pretty sure it could be considered poetry.
SuYin completed fanfic list. Painstakingly gathered. Take a look.
