I'm gonna buy a new LCD monitor for my comp soon and I dont really care about the looks I just want the best specs rolleyes.gif

I alredy kno the basics of LCD specs like less power consumption is better and the lighter it weighs the better but not much else....

So here are some of the specs that are mentioned, if someone could tell me wats the best/worst for each that would be great thanks biggrin.gif

Brightness - normally around 300cd/m(2) is more better?

Contrast Ratio - saw one that was 2000:1 and another that was 500:1 unsure.gif

Viewing Angle - saw one that was 160/160 and another that was 150 (H) / 130 (V) unsure.gif

Response Time - friend told me that the lower the better...8ms is bad, 5ms is better?

Resolution - 1680 x 1050, 1400 x 900?

Pixel Pitch - 0.2835(H) x 0.2835(V)mm) or 0.282

Signal Frequency (Analog/Digital)

Audio Features - Is this really important?

If there are any important features that i missed out on, feel free to inform me smile.gif Cheers

Brightness - normally around 300cd/m(2) is more better? More is better to a point too bright will hurt your eyes if you can't turn it down.

Contrast Ratio - saw one that was 2000:1 and another that was 500:1 unsure.gif Preference I think, sometime super high contrast ratios look turn washed out for me.

Viewing Angle - saw one that was 160/160 and another that was 150 (H) / 130 (V) unsure.gif Normally people are looking for bigger viewing angles, not a big deal if you're always in one place though.

Response Time - friend told me that the lower the better...8ms is bad, 5ms is better? 5ms is better for gaming with the higher speed panels you can lose image quality.. not much though, I have like 16ms response time, which should be slow, but I get no ghosting or anything in games. *crosses fingers*

Resolution - 1680 x 1050, 1400 x 900? Bigger looks better but can your system support a higher resolution without any slowdowns? I have the larger res, but I can barely play any games at it on my 3.5 year old rig.

Pixel Pitch - 0.2835(H) x 0.2835(V)mm) or 0.282
Signal Frequency (Analog/Digital) if your system supports it.

Audio Features - Is this really important? Not unless you need them.

If there are any important features that i missed out on, feel free to inform me smile.gif Cheers

I am the minority here.

I think LCDs nowadays have come to the point where the difference in specs don't matter as much as they used to.

But...I guess what you want to look for is:
  • Price
  • Size (17", 19", 22" wide, 30" wide?) - nowadays, widescreen is the new craze. its good for gaming/video viewing, but bad for things like...internet browsing (you spend more time scrolling up and down than left and right), office productivity stuff
  • Native Resolution - this one is important if you're a gamer...usually you want the highest resolution one (gives you more apparent viewing space). BUT, if your computer is too weak/slow to game at that native res at a decent FPS...you'll hafta use a non-native res, which results in more fuzzy/less-sharp interpolated display. so...you should pick a higher resolution one if you have the system to match.
  • contrast/brightness/viewing angle - i guess greater is better? lol...
  • HDCP output -- if you have the gfx card and HD content to match...if you want
  • uniform brightness - some cheaper LCDs seem to have a "halo" effect. what i mean is that the screen is brighter in the centre compared to the corners. even on my samsung, i can notice it a BIT. some models are more even than others. but i doubt you'll notice it anyways.. tongue.gif
  • response time - they're all <5ms nowdays...so no prob here
  • usb ports - some higher end models come with usb ports on the sides (like the dell widescreen LCDs). thats probably a desirable feature for some people.

and what do you mean by "audio features"? you mean integrated speakers? those suck...probably not something you want on your monitor dry.gif

much of what tepper said is right.
1000:1 constrast ratio is good enough
20ish MS is fine if you are not really gaming or anything. You'll want the smallest possible if you want the best monitor though. Can't go wrong with 5ms.

for a sidenote, i think widescreen looks MUCH better than regular. considering you look at more stuff on a horizontal level...or whatever. lol
