LONDON (Dow Jones/AP) -- A system failure of the BlackBerry wireless e-mail system has snarled use of the popular devices.
A recording on the BlackBerry helpline Wednesday acknowledged the problem, but didn't detail its cause or exact scope.
"Please be advised that we are currently experiencing a service interruption that is causing delays in sending or receiving messages," the message said. "We apologize for the inconvenience, and will provide updates as soon as they become available."
Shares of Research In Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM) , which owns the Blackberry system, were down 9 percent to $29.20 in premarket trading.
The BlackBerry system suffered a "massive system failure" after infrastructure failed at 8:00 p.m. EDT Tuesday, New York's WNBC NewsChannel4 reported on its Web site. A ZDNet blog also said the trouble began at 8:00 p.m.
A company spokeswoman in the U.K. wasn't immediately available for comment.
