hi, i need some help on how i can purchase a ".com" web domain.
i need one to set up my portfolio.

where do i start? and how much do i need to usually pay? (i need something really basic with little webspace) > cause i'm a broke student w/o that much money.

is there a way to get a .com website for free? sorry i really have no idea about this stuff since i've never done it...
and is it true you have to keep paying money every year? cause that seems really annoying...

to start your own site with a ".com" name, you need to first find a hosting service. usually hosting services offer you a free 1 year domain registration with it (.com, .org, or .net). you might be able to find a better one from another domain seller. as for webspace, you shouldn't worry too much because most offer alot of storage space anyways, so whether you need a little space or a lot, you'll find a good deal. You can either pay monthly, or yearly. I signed up with http://www.powweb.com, they charge only $7.77 a month or $98 a year. im sure there's better hosts out there so just ask & keep searching and make sure you read reviews before commiting to it.

i never found a web host that gave someone a .com domain for free. you don't have to buy a .com domain though, but if that is the route you're going i hear http://yahoo.com and http://1and1.com are good.

ooh so i can actually buy a ".com" domain from sites like yahoo?

and what do you mean i don't have to buy a .com domain???
isn't that how you obtain it?

and dang 98 dollars is alot! i didn't think it would be that expensive. sad.gif
i dont know why but i thought i remembered my friend telling me she payed like $14 for a .com for a year~
but i mustve heard wrong~

this is getting frustrating.

there must be more people on soompi who have their own .com websites... ???

you can go to http://www.webhostingjury.com/ to check the different hosts.

as for me, my sites are hosted at www.u2-web.com and www.siteground.com. some hosts will give you the domain.

my domains (the .com address) are registered in godaddy.com though - godaddy has hosting but i personally do not like the plans they offer.

when u sign up with a web host, you're real URL would not be a .com site instead it might be something like "www.powweb.com/chula" or whatever...then you can buy a .com domain name like "www.chula.com" to redirect to that url. so typing www.chula.com would bring you to "www.powweb.com/chula".

as for your friend talking about paying $14 a year, she's prob talking about the .com domain name fee only. so u might pay around $98 for the hosting and another $14 a year for the ".com" name.

^ooh i see. i kind of get what you are saying.

and actually i would just want to find/make my own website and then buy the .com domain name.
so i besides godaddy.com what are some other places to buy domain names? (since i want to very carefully investigate the cheapest possible deal i can get)

^ oh sorry, you already posted about godaddy on top lol :x

i went to http://www.godaddy.com/ to check if the site is available. if it is, i buy it and then i find someone to host it for me~

my friend used vizaweb.com and said this "they give you free domains with your plans, so that helps cut off about 10 bucks a year, depending on where you buy your domains"

but she currently has the following domain
she bought the domain at here
and bought the host here
