Hey, I'm just looking for some possible insights which may help me for my (big ugly) final report. Below is a link to a poll, which I really really wish every one will take a few seconds to answer (5 questions only!). If I could, I'd give out free candy as an incentive =( So please please please help me out.

Survey/Poll

To be relevant and spur up some sort of discussion (where insights are beneficial for my final report), I'd like to broach the topic of copyrighted materials & Youtube.

Ever since Google purchased Youtube, there's been much controversy over how to control distribution of copyrighted materials (of course, this has long existed but Youtube seems to be the current victim).

One response to this was to sue the hell out of Youtube. Viacom filed a 1 billion dollars lawsuit last month and ordered Youtube to take down a number of clips. Well yea, Viacom might be 1 billion dollars richer, but even with the downfall of Youtube, other sites exist & will emerge.

Another is to create an alternative website. Viacom recently signed a deal with Joost, some new p2p software that allows for sharing of high quality media (selected content only), while NBC Universal & NewsCorp (Fox, etc.) joined to create their own website to launch in the summer. Both aims to reclaim audiences from Youtube and stop distribution of copyrighted content.

Soooo, my question is, which approach do you think is most effective? What are other possible solutions to controlling copyrighted materials?

My idea is for NBC Universal, Newscorp, etc to sign a deal with Youtube instead of investing money in alternative sites that may or may not succeed. Here, copyright holders get to take advantage of Youtube's large audience/traffic & the likelihood for success is much greater.

So yeah, thoughts? (Oh yeah, don't forget to take the poll =) )
