Yeah they can get pretty hot, but that's the same with pretty much all laptops i've used. I have a Macbook Pro and i can use it on my lap without burning (thanks Titanium case!) but it makes my legs sweat.
im thinking of getting a macbook (never used one before, only randomly cus my friends' ones looked interesting and pretty haha)
i have a few questions; (warning:i am TOTAL MAC/LAPTOP NOOOB)
- Would i have to purchase microsoft office separately? (what word processing program does mac come with?)
- Whats the difference between "combo" and "superdrive"?
- In the 'specs' area, wat does it mean if it says "1GB/120GB"??? (and is the higher the better??)
- Do they break easily....? like freeze/ that horrible blue screen lol
- Is it compatible with any printer? (so if i plug in my HP printer into USB will it work?)
ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!
- Yes, MS Office is a separate purchase with any computer
- combo drive typically means a CD-RW/DVD-ROM. A "superdrive" is Apple's unique word to describe one drive that can play and burn both CDs and DVDs, including double-layer DVDs.
- i'm guessing it means 1GB RAM with a 120GB Hard Drive
- Macs do not get blue screens of death, and are much more stable OS than Windows because it's based on Linux/UNIX kernal.
- For the most part it should be compatible with any printer that uses USB, most HP printers come with a PC software disk and a Mac software drivers disk.
So it seems, at least from your response, that macs are much more carefree than windows.
Of those programs listed on that site, you recommend only OnYx?
Have you any experience with some of the other ones: Spring Cleaning, Maintenance, and iTool are some of the few that caught my eye.
Also, I'm not assuming macs are immune yet, but if I was to accidently get a spyware, is there an all-rounded program I can use? I noticed my macbook working a bit strange yesterday, mostly likely from skimmng pages on photobucket. Strange as in: sometimes when I click the links on forums, such as 'reply' the screen automatically jumps to the very top. Another one is when I type in a keyword in the search engine on Photobucket. I completely ignores my search and refreshes to what seems like the home page- odd things here and there, is there a way to combat this?
Thanks
OnYx is the only one i've used...i don't have issues with spyware or performance so i rarely use these tools, but they all work pretty much the same. When in doubt try them all, it can't hurt.
There's a lot of different kinds of Spyware. It may not be spyware, it could simply be browser issues or malicious HTML code...a lot of sites do not program their sites to run well off of Mac versions of Safari or Firefox, and you will get a lot of quirky issues. Otherwise, if you're using Firefox simply use the "Erase Private Data" and that will clean everything out for you.

Hi, in Garageband as well as in the system you need to manually set it to use your 3rd party microphone since by default OS X will try to use the built in first. To change this go under the Apple symbol and go to System Preferences. Click on Sound, and click on the tab Input. You should see your microphone listed there as well as "Internal microphone". Simply click on your microphone nd close the window. In Garageband it's basically the same thing:
Garageband>Preferences>Audio/MIDI
Choose under the drop down menu next to the Audio input your microphone.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll try OnYx before I venture out.
I restarted my laptop, cleared my history, emptied the cash and 'reset safari.'
It seems to be working fine now, so it might have been of what you mentioned.
I always assume the worst since I'm still accustomed to a PC.
Mac's are for the most part, self-cleaners, that makes things more convenient, but do you find an antivirus program necessary for macs?

I have a Mac Pro and want to reboot/upgrade my computer, like new. I currently have four internal hard drives with three and a half terabytes. Can I keep the main hard drive in and take the other three out and reboot my computer and put my hard drives back in without losing any data, or will I need to reformat the hard drives which will wipe them out clean =/
Thanks in advance =)

Yes, you can actually leave them in.
I'm assuming the 4 drives you have, 1 is the main Macintosh HD?
If so note which drive it is, re-boot with ur OS X DVD, and follow the on screen instructions. Make sure you select the right drive.
If u are a bit wary about it, you can remove your other 3 drives, then do the install, then plug them back in.
The only drive that will be totally wiped clean will be the drive with the OS X.

No. I used Macs since the early Apple IIgs as well as PC and i have never gotten a virus on a Mac. The whole mentally of writing a virus, worm, or trojan is to infect as many systems as possible. Since the Mac OS is still a relative minority in the overall personal computing market, most of these guys don't feel it's worthwhile to write two sets of virii. I'm not saying that will never change, and personally since Mac OS has changed to intel based chips running DDR RAM, i think it only makes it easier for these guys to start writing PC/Mac compatible virii in the future. But for now, i wouldn't bother with it. I've generally round McAfee and Norton's to be utterly useless in their Mac versions. I Googled for "Mac anti virus" and came across ClamXav. Might wanna check it out, it's free and could give you that extra sense of security. Glad I could help!

If you're in school ask for the school discount, and get the Office 2008 for Mac
Home and Student Edition as it will be cheaper.

Yeah to expound on what Xarthan says. Your OS is installed and runs from one hard drive. That's why you can upgrade/format without it touching the other drives. Windows also works this way. If you have multiple partitions or hard drives and you reformat or reinstall Windows on your C:\ drive the other drives will be untouched unless you reformat them manually.
You're going to have to give us more information.
- What kind of Printer is it?
- Is it networked or plugged via (USB) straight into your MBP?
- Do you have admin privileges on the MBP?
- How are you trying to connect the printer?
- Is Mac OS giving you any kind of error messages?

i actually encountered the same problem yesterday. brought my laptop in school and tried to log in to yahoo messenger, and i wasn't able to get in. i tried logging into my Skype account and it worked. i thought yahoo was acting up on me again, but i guess i wasn't alone.
if you really want to use yahoo messenger in school, you could use meebo.com and log into your ym account.

I can't seem to turn off my laptop.
It's been on sleep for the whole day.
Whenever I try to turn it off, this is what it says.

Why won't it turn off?
