It doesn't matter what we prefer it's what you need. If you need to use Microsoft Office then you'll need to pick it up. If you can do without certain features found in the office suite you could always try Open Office. Just be aware that you can't do everything with it that you can with Microsoft Office.

However recently opened photobooth and the capture screen only shows up as a solid green hue.
I am able to photograph this green screen, but I'm wondering why my webcam isn't working?
The green led light above is on so it should be functioning I assume.
I double checked - all applications have been shut down
Cleaned my internet cache and cookies
I was searching around google and found an artical that sometimes a hacker is able to
gain the function of your webcam and see you sitting at the monitor - I am hoping this is not the case.
If anyone has any advice, most appreciated.
Edit: for now I just put tape over the led area - slightly paranoid from that article,
and I have deleted all of my photos off my laptop
Edit: restarted a few times, no impact

Sounds like your webcam is busted and is a Hardware issue, take it into an Apple store if you can or call Apple Support.

i think that happened to me a couple of times. restarting didn't do anything, but when i shut down and turned it on again, it was gone. it hasn't happened for a while now.

Asked around some classmates and found this worked:
Turn laptop on
Before the grey start up screen appears hold down the keys:
Command
Option
P
R
The laptop should automatically restart again.
The volume resets to loud etc
I peeked under my taped webcam and the green light is gone and photobooth works!

No particular reason, OSX & Windows have generally only supported *.BMP & *.JPG/*.JPEG for years. If you really want this picture to be your background image just convert it to *.JPG

That is to force the computer to "Purge RAM" hence the P & R.
