Yay, just got a brand new iMac 24" biggrin.gif. It's beautiful! The screen is insanely vibrant, and the colors are amazing! I installed Windows Vista with Boot Camp, 350 Gb partition.

Anyone know any good Wallpapers that are in 1920x1200 resolution?

I googled but no solution. I want the Macbook to stay on and the network connection to stay active even when the it is closed. I know it goes to sleep by design but is there any way around this?

have you tried InsomniaX

OK, I think I just did something incredibly stupid to my macbook. You see, I was searching for some movie reviews on Google. I ended up clicking on one of the links, and then all of a sudden the Safari window literally turns into this miniscule box, and this message pops up saying I've been infected with a virus on my Mac. Of course, being the stupid person that I am, clicked on the link where it said "run a scan now!" Then it led me to this window where it showed a window of this "VIRUS DOCTOR SOFTWARE" cleaning my Windows C: Drive. The only problem is, I wasn't using a Windows PC, I was using my macbook! Thus, me realizing it was a scam, and I immediately did a shut down. I'm afraid that the Virus Doctor virus somehow installed itself into my Macbook without me realizing how it did so. Is there anyone that can please give me peace of mind, or perhaps a way to somehow remove this virus before it eats into my laptop drive, please? I honestly feel so ridiculous and scared. sad.gif

I am also assuming it is a windows program malware, because of the Window C: Drive pop up.

I was planning on buying a 15in Macbook Pro and was wondering if there was any major difference (other than aesthetics) between the current version and the previous one before it.
The main complaint that I have heard is that the current version does not come with a matte screen. I actually prefer matte but I'm not in many environments where glossy would become a big issue.
The main programs I'll be using would be Firefox and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Occasionally I'll use Photoshop/Illustator but I'm not too concerned about glossy altering the colors or anything like that.
I just want something that'll run smoothly for my purposes. In the end it may come down to the price and the newer models are cheaper than the old ones.

I'd get the older one, since they're a lot cheaper and the matte screen is a lot nicer. If I knew that the 17" had a matte screen, I would have just gotten the 17" instead of the 15".

For my iMac, I never have problems with it being glossy, since I always use it at home. However, with my new MBP, I always see reflections when I use it anywhere outside of home which is getting a little annoying... If I make the brightness full, it gets better, but I like to keep it low to conserve battery life. If I could somehow exchange my MBP for the 17" MBP, I would so do it -,.-

Can anyone please answer my question? Or, possibly give me some feedback, please? It would really help. It's been a day since the possible installation of the virus into my macbook. sad.gif

Previous post is about 4 posts up from this one if anyone cares.

Hi colormuffin,

I would not worry! Applications (exe files) intended for a Windows machine can not run in OS X (without some sort of emulation such as VMWare/Parallels/Darwine)

The site you encountered was most likely an attempt to sell you software! Seriously, Virus Doctor Software, along with a ton of other spyware/malware/grayware/etc. scanners all have one objective : To scare you into buying their software. Those flashy banners, "Your computer is infected with spyware! Scan here to remove it!" are nothing but sales leads for these companies. The worst (and often humorous for us Mac users) are those that have been designed to mimic Windows operating systems to really add that extra "fear factor" wink.gif

That's not to say our beloved OS is perfect....but rest assured, right now, you're pretty much safe from all the malicious viruses/spyware/adware/etc that plagues our PC brethren ;D

Take care!
I am on FaceBook. Ninja mode, tho. So PM me with your details and I'll add you ;D

My macbook pro ended up failing on me earlier this week. I had my computer on hibernate overnight with the AC plugged in, and somehow, the logic board died by itself. I now have to wait till parts come in so that they can fix it. Do you know if they'll give me a temporary laptop to use while they ship it away to fix?

Just an update to people who were interested. They fixed it up for me and when they showed me the invoice for the repairs:

$1,539.00 crazy.gif

I'm glad warranty covered it, so the lesson is to get applecare w00t.gif

@ j79
Thank you so much for the feedback, it really puts my mind at ease, and it's nice to know that it's not a big deal! smile.gif Truly, thank you.

@ ssulja
lol, thanks for your feedback, too! Nice to know nothing happened to your computer, even though the same thing came about. smile.gif

I'm glad to see there is even a mac user thread on soompi!

I have a black macbook...
2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB Memory
160GB Hard Drive
OS X Leopard 10.5

It's my first mac and I love it! ❤

Hi,

If a virus infected your Windows install, it would be limited to just your Windows partition (or disk image if it's virtualized) and any shared folders you give access to.

If you are running Windows in a virtual environment (Parallels, for instance) a good way to protect yourself is to copy/back up the Windows disk image (the 'hdd' file for Parallels) after a fresh install, so you have a clean copy incase something were to happen.

Have you tried calibrating your battery? It may give you a few extra cycles. Otherwise, it's probably time for a new battery. I would go into the Apple store and ask them what's up - depending on who you get (some Apple geniuses are cooler than others), they may just swap out the battery for you.

Good luck.

Here are the directions for calibrating a battery, if you haven't done so yet.

CODE
1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.

2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.

3. Disconnect the power adapter with the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, you will see the low battery warning dialog on the screen.

4. Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep.

5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

i've only had my macbook pro for 9 months, and the cd drive is acting weirdly.

when i put a disk in there (whether it's a program, cd, cd-r), it'll get spit back out. i'll heard the drive making noise for a minute or so, it'll spit it back out. in the beginning, my mac would be picky over what it would take, but now it won't take anything.

i haven't dropped or bumped my laptop or anything, so i'm confused as to what might've caused this.

is there something i can do to fix this myself, or should i just take it into an apple store?

I have a question.. I'm going to college in the fall and the apartment I might stay at says that an ethernet cable is needed to connect to the internet.
I have a 13" white macbook.. would any random ethernet cable work?
