For torrents, as long as you're using Firefox, Opera or another secure browser, you'll be fine. I usually only download music off torrents. Personally, I have never used virus protection, but here's a list of programs. Transmission is an excellent torrent client, especially compared to the others I've used (BitRocket, mostly.)
I think I'll be getting my family a 24" iMac (I already have a 15" Macbook Pro), and get that free iTouch and printer for myself. I'm sure I'll have to use my student discount, instead of my military discount though.

thank you! I was asking whether the torrented programs themselves are sprinkled with spyware, rather than the website you download them from~ Like how any cracked software you find for windows come with nice little spyware these days.

Yep, scroll down to see that there's a $100 rebate for printers. The iTouch / Nano deal is also a rebate.
Well, there are rarely if not any viruses on Mac OS X, at least not from what I heard of. If you're running Windows on Mac, might be a different story. I've downloaded a few programs on torrents... Microsoft Office, Photoshop, and the Sims 2 game, never got a virus. If you want to be safe, the favorite virus scanner for Os X is ClamXav.

Can you explain how running xp on a mac would become a threat? That's exactly what I have to do (my school programs don't offer mac options), and I just thought if I put xp I would get all the anti-spyware/anti-virus programs on it as I do now and regularly make sure it's clean. But how would spyware or viruses be able to transfer over, if at all? I once read someone post that even if you forcefully put a windows spyware file on leopard it wouldn't do anything because it won't run on a diff. OS, hence why you need diff. programs for a mac in the first place. if I put windows on a different partition (I guess I have to), I should be okay right?
I'm also wondering how running xp and leopard at the same time would affect spyware from windows. Does this allow it to taint leopard? If you use fusion to run a program in mac, would that allow spyware/viruses to temporarily pass through?
Sorry for being so troublesome. Doing my final research before buying the macbook for september.
p.s. do you know any popular mac forums that might be helpful for getting everything tweaked properly? advanced settings, etc.

You can return it within 14 days of the purchase date. You'll have to pay a restocking fee though.

my views on Mac (the mac computers)
i use them at school, and they're actually really good (if only the processors were fast) if not better than Windows in certain aspects.
i like how they don't usually freeze for no reason unlike windows, windows goes on crashfest.
i also like macs because alot of "professional" editing programs are based on macs. like final cut pro =)
except the drawbacks are really big.
that you can't really game on them because companies dont design games to be played on macs =(
and the compatability stuff.
but overall, macs are really good

Yeah, for you it's worth it because you make $79 out of it. For me, it wouldn't be worth it since my restocking fee is more than the cost of the iPod. However I'm still mulling it over -- the overall timing was just bad for me because my finals are next week and I shouldn't be tinkering around with an iMac until they're over, so I might return it tomorrow... -.-

*Question: I downloaded Microsoft Office for Mac =___= off the internet.. do you think they'll check my computer or anything? im hoping that they'll just do the transaction only and not even look at my comp. >_<
Question2: I have to bring the box.. right? >_< i have to take the bus two towns over -__- store my computer/box at work for 10 hours (hoping no one will steal it.. we've been having a theft problem at work lately), and then take the bus over to the mall where the apple store is. -0-) boy will this be inconvenient. -.-
