Then why should they buy a mac ? Just buy a PC then. wacko.gif It's such a waste if you buy a mac and just use Windows.

At the moment, with macs you get a $100 education discount plus a free ipod touch ($299 value) plus a free printer (upto $99 value). Not to mention macbooks look pretty with their minimalism style wink.gif How can you say no to a free 299 new toy?!

I just got my first Mac (Macbook), still getting used to it but I love it so far.

Can't really go wrong with getting a free Ipod Touch for purchasing it.

I love how fast it starts up too.

I'm just wondering how hard it is to install more memory by myself on this Macbook, I want more than 1 gig.

Sorry just have to ask again.. is there a good reliable program that will clean my macbook of possible spyware/adaware and prevent my comp from getting infected by viruses? I like to browse the internet alot (esp to look to download yaoi manga).. and so i come across alot of sketchy websites sometimes, and I 'm always downloading alot of stuff - which i believe makes me more susceptible to unwanted pests? I just want to make sure nothing happens to my comp. >_<

And unless the macbook already comes with a firewall.. how would i go about getting one..? i am definitely not tech savvy.. so i dont know if i have to install one or if i can just meddle with the system preferences to set one up? 0_0

i can follow directions pretty well (lol).

My white macbook keyboard gets dirty realllly easily. I've had my macbook for ~20 days. I religiously wash my hands before touching it, so I don't understandddd why it's getting so dirty so fast.

What should I use to keep it clean and from getting it dirty again :[

I've been to plenty of sites downloading stuff here and there, and so far in the past year I've started using my pro, I've never had any viruses. You can click basically anything you want [even those virus spams on msn messenger] and you won't get anything that'll impede the performance of your macbook. Adware and spyware scripts and programs simply aren't compatible with the formats that macs run on. I mean, sure there's mac targeted viruses and bots, but I haven't run into any yet. So save the space and memory usage, cuz you won't need a thing smile.gif.. the beauty of macs blush.gif .

I heard alot of people used glass wipes.

Goombi: well i read (and it might even have been in this thread) how macs ARE vulnerable to viruses (made for macs), though they may not be as common as macs for windows/pc, and that its ignorant to think that macs are invincible to nasty programs. But now that macs are being used more (seriously, all the students in the two universities i attended owns at least one mac), the amount of viruses should rise as well, and because I tend to have the worst of luck (unfortunately, i am not joking), I think i would just feel better. But i mean, if you mac/tech savvy ppl think it really is unnecessary, I guess I dont need it as of right now.

Speaking of bad luck.. when I "returned" my mac to apply for the promo.. this really old guy helped us do all the transactions, and his machine kind of went haywire but he said that it went through and that I should be refunded the $1000 something and that he will charge my mom's credit card for the new payment. I check my statements regularly online, and I noticed that my $1000 hasnt been refunded.. and my mom said that her credit card was charged. And so i waited and waited (cuz sometimes it takes time for new balances to be registered into the system and show up), and its been a month now and I'm still charged $1000+. I'm going to go talk to them tomorrow, but now I've got these fees i have to pay for having a balance and such. But I'm not really surprised. I kind of just passively accept my luck.

--EDIT--

i forgot. the reason why i came here was cuz i was curious about something. every now and then, i get a computer icon with a name (currently 'ed') under the Shared category on the left side panel of the Finder. I was wondering what this was?

So I've finally decided that it's time to get a new laptop. My Dell laptop of four years has caught an inextricably complicated virus and is internally heating (more so than it should, I heard from the tech people) and in danger of exploding at any moment. I'm starting college next year and I want to get a laptop that'll last me through 4 years. I'm studying Econ so I don't need anything too complicated and I'm not a serious gamer but I do like graphics programs and I need a math modelling program. At the same time, I'm a student so I don't want to shell out like $92112387987 for a comp. I know I get student discount but I'm interested in the black 13'' MacBook. What's the difference between the black and the white one asides from color? I don't like white laptops because they get dirty easily but my friend told me that I can get one of those colored protective cases. What do you guys think? Is it worth getting the black one or just getting the white one and getting a colored case instead? And do you think a MacBook Pro is worth it for a college student?

Also, is the free iPod thing a scam or for real? I have a 30G VideoIpod now but I'm kind of tempted by the candycolored 8G Ipod.

^I think the black MacBook costs more just for the sake of color. But if I were you, I would buy the black MacBook, because all the white ones I've seen were SO dirty. It's not that you need a case for the outside, but on the keyboard and mousepad -- that area becomes grey/yellow very fast sleep.gif And unless you need to use the video card (because you do a lot of graphic design/photography/video programs or do a lot of gaming? O_O), I think a MacBook is good enough

the spec for the black macbook is slightly different to the white ones.

Even if you configure the white MacBook to have 250gb hard drive instead of 160gb (same specifications as the black MacBook), it is still $100 cheaper than the black MacBook, so you're paying $100 just for the color.
