Chinese Dramas Nowadays Are Lacking In So Many Ways Compared To Older Ones? Do you agree?

I grew up watching Chinese dramas (mostly the ancient ones) since my family WERE fanatics for them.
The older dramas were great. The storyline were great, the actors/actresses were superb, and the dramas were overall enjoyable...
However, in recent years, Chinese dramas seem to be deteriorating...

There are good looking actors/actress, however, their acting is pretty bad. Sorry, but I just have to point out Liu Fi Yei...
The production isn''t all that great either. Despite of the fact that technology has advanced, effects in these dramas seem to be getting worse, seem to look tacky.
There have been a lot of remakes in recent years. For example, a recent one is Return of the Condor Heroes. IMO, the best version was the 95' version. The 06' version of ROTCH seems more like a teen idol drama to me... with bad acting. Overall, the way the drama was film isn't too impressive compared to the 95' version.
ROTCH is only one of the many story that has been bad remakes.

Is there a reason behind this deteroriation in Chinese dramas quality?
I'm getting kind of sad, because I remember how I used to be obsessed with these dramas..
But now, everywhere I look, all i see are dramas with good looking actors, which is probably the best aspect of it. -____-
What happened?
Any drama that I watch, I seem to be watching to be drooling for the actors, instead of actually enjoy watching the drama...
it's pretty sad.

i agree.

i think it's because they are running out of good ideas for plots and the older actors/actresses are either getting too old to act or they already have families and don't want to continue acting.

but still, there are some chinese dramas that are good and i do enjoy seeing hot guys in dramas. XD

Yeah, I totally know what you mean!
Especially in TVB dramas, no offence.
The worst drama I've watched was like Four Leaf Clover one, forgot the name.
All the actors/actresses were new and had no idea how to act.
But I'm actually enjoying Ten Brothers (Sup Hing Dai?).
I kinda 'gave up' on watching TVB dramas now.
Please prove me wrong.
Or I just have different taste.
Since I'm totally obsessed with Taiwan/Japan/Korean dramas now.

I agree with you.
I remember the old days when I was like 11 years old,
watching those dramas and they made me cry and obsessed with them.
Such great storyline and acting.
Nowadays....just lame and boring stories, even if some stories are good...they drag somehow anyway.
Older generations...so many great actors&actresses, now...just like good looking people
but I feel almost half of them = lacking of acting abilities.
I feel very sad about this.
For almost 3 years now I haven't watch any new chinese dramas, just koreans ones.
Chinese dramas that I do watch are from old times.
Lately, the ONLY chinese/taiwanese drama I watched in 3 years is It started with a kiss.
I hope there will be a change.

Yeap, totally agree. Me and my friends only watch Chinese dramas because of the actor/actress, not because they have a fantastic plot. Scriptwriters seem to be running out of ideas for plots, the storyline of almost every drama is the same. The female lead gets some disease and dies or something like that. Its getting really boring.

Remakes of Jin Yong novels are getting worse and worse because well, none of them could compare to the orginal!

Overuse of computer graphics piss me off in fighting scenes. They hit each other twice and then blast a boulder in half w/ a point of a finger and call that martial arts. sleep.gif

The actors and actresses are getting better looks-wise, but acting wise... well lets just say thank goodness they have their looks wink.gif

I'd rather rewatch my old TVB series back in the golden 80s.

I know...I know..I've noticed this..the Cantonese dramas from TVB and Mandarin dramas are now lacking. I used to enjoy Chinese dramas greatly since 1 was 8 years old but now I hardly watch them...I think Mandarin dramas have it the worst...People like Devil Beside You, Frog Prince etc etc bla bla...But I get so TURNED OFF by it everytime I start watching an episode..They use too much sound effects, not much diff in cast selections who I think still cannot act..Very cliche...You could prob guess what's happening next already...I don't get how Taiwanese drama directors like to put those 90s video effects..Like when someone says something that is supposedly controversial, they'll repeatingly will play the person's face expression over and over again..The heroines are all in the poor, don't give up, supposedly very kawaii category...And the actors, seriously...their hair!!! So girlish..Plus Fob-ish fashions!! Gah..I can't stand it anymore!!!

I mean really if you compare with Jdoramas and Kdramas, those dramas are a top notch higher
-What I say, most of the time....It's right...So just accept it and save it into your system-

not fit into the ANCIENT times or whatever...

I agree. I used to watch Chinese series (mostly TVB) all the time when I was younger...but none of the storylines these days interests me. They need to improve on their stories! They're all so boring now.

I totally agree with you. I really couldn't stand watching devil beside u, frog prince, or any movie with that guy from frog prince -___-
but my sis, who never really watches dramas, didn't mind watchin those dramas...so i guess it's different for everyone. But if u've seen a lot of good ones, u tend to have higher expectations and these current dramas can't really live up to it sad.gif

TVB series... omg. I don't even watch them anymore. I used to sit infront of the TV everyday, and watch the series on TV. I used to always be excited when it was 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm LOL. But now, I don't think I've watched the chinese channel since like... half a year now. It's all so boring now. The same things happen over and over. Plus has anyone noticed, that with TVB, they reuse the same actors/actresses over and over again? I think we need some new faces. I'm getting quite bored.

for a great mainland "idol drama", I would recommend 恰同学少年。I wouldn't exactly call it an idol drama, b/c there's not really an idol quality to it. But its audience would be mainly the younger generation. It's so inspirational, makes wanna jump inside the pouring rain and just imbibe the nature around us.

There's also a new 琼瑶 drama out, a remake of 一帘幽梦。The girls are very pretty, acting is ok except for the main girl, who kinda drives me nuts with her stupidity. I would recommend this if you are a die hard romantic and likes sappy love dramas. Not really my type though.

Yes, chinese dramas are kinda crap nowadays when you compare it to Korean dramas or Japanese dramas. Chinese (as in Hong Kong for me) dramas used to be all I watched and now I watched an episode here and there. It's just that they seem so fake now and alot of them can't even act or they annoy me tongue2.gif . People really liked Heart of Greed but I saw some episodes and while it was a little bit better than some other shows it was still too...typical for me.

And I heard this from some where but I think that TVB requires singers to remake their entire music videos so that it features a person signed under TVB before they allow it to air at TVB

TVB drama's really suck now.
Most of them are almost predictable, and the end always has to be the " cheesy group gathering"
AND. it is always the same faces. ron. raymond. bosco. myolie. charmaine. or the same CAST.
no fresh faces.
And let's not forget the new comers who totally suck.
toby leung. suki . kate tsui. etc.
and the people who deserve more recognition... don't .

I gave up on TVB dramas a long time ago...

hooray for korean/tw/japanese dramas ^^

Chinese dramas as in Taiwanese, Hong Kong(TVB) or Mainland china??

For TVB series, i still watch them just for the heck of it haha although i do admit im getting sick of seeing the same faces over and over again. The new actresses really sucks though. All TVB series are pretty much the same laugh.gif but im okay with it

As for Hong kong movies...i think hong kong comes out with the worst movies. *sigh* i wont even get started on it. (lol im hknese myself)

I've only watched one Taiwanese drama and after that one i steered away from all of them laugh.gif sorry if i come off rude, but half of taiwanese actresses CANT act nor do they look any better in appearance theres nobody to drool over
