Well, its getting real close to the time that everyone has to turn in their SIR and stuff... I was just wondering what are your two thoughts on UC IRVINE and UC SANTA BARBARA.

and I have my family wanting me to go to UCSB and my friends who suggest that I go to UCI?

I've searched around this forum but not alot of people on soompi go to UCSB so yeah... sweatingbullets.gif

SB = party school only if you associate yourself in that crowd. there are always a LOT of people who AREN'T partiers at ANY university. you may have more options to go to parties (we're talking house parties) at sb, but that doesn't mean you have to go party. both irvine and sb are pretty dead at night. there's nothing exciting do from what people tell me. sb has nicer beaches, though. and when you turn 21, there are decent bars/clubs at both, but irvine has the advantage of being near LA, where you can have fun hollywood style. if you don't want to party too much, just associate with the right crowd. there are still TONS of people who aren't the party-type. Join an academic club, a religious group, or meet some friendly people in a Korean American Student Association.

so much for talk on partying. now about diversity. i don't know the number now, but 5 years ago UCI had a 60% asian student body. ucsb, located in the central coast, is less diverse (primarily white). and its neighbor (my school) cal poly is the least diverse public university in california. schools located in northern or southern california tend to have more diversity. if you are really serious about academics and a bright future, find the school that has the better program for your major. i guarantee you will be tempted/distracted to do stuff other than study at either school. but in the end, it's your decision, not the popular crowd's decision, to be diligent.

with all that said, if you love the beach, go to sb. if you want a diverse community, go to irvine. if you like to house party, go to sb. if you like big city night life, go to irvine (near LA). if you want to have a sound academic background, find out which school is better for that and balance your work/social life.

go to the school that is best for your major! =] but really, undergrad doesnt really matter. What matters is that you perform. Make your decision based on which is the better campus and which college suits you better. Med schools aren't going to see uci or ucsb and consider you better. Oh yeah, uci med school has a quota for its own students. They give their own students an advantage to their own med school. sorry if you're not gonna be a bio major T_T lol...but i only know information mainly on biosci.

oh..some of my friends on facebook says...

1. UCI is diverse and that keeps things interesting smile.gif
2. UCI has great research opportunities and has more undergrad research opportunities t
3. UCI has a perfect location for people looking for internships and to shadow people in various professions to explore future careers
4. beach + disneyland + LA + not too far from the bay area, but far enough to put some distance from home so I can be more independent
5. the people are pretty cool smile.gif
6. it's one of the richest UC campuses and fastest growing and DEFINITELY most beautiful!

Whoa thats the first time I heard someone call UCSB, University of Sex and Beer. hahaha

What does it mean that you hope I live near UCI?
Is that suppose to be something bad? because I live 7 hours away from UCI but I want to go to a school somewhat far away from home so that i can have some independency in my life away from the influence of my parents.

But yeah, well since I only have like 4 more days to sign my SIR, I think I'm gonna go to UCI. It seems like the better choice... even though UCSB has really hot white guys... and the atmosphere is really pretty.
Well I hear that UCSB is a party school but I think that its only a party school if you make it a party school. And when someone says UCI is an antisocial school, its only antisociAL IF YOU MAKE YOURSELF ANTISOCIAL.

I dunno but I heard some people tell me that UCSB is a better school than UCI. and THEN i heard UCI is a better school then UCSB... so I'm totally confused about which one is a better school.

hm ucsb...alot of poeple make into the school. kids with super low GPA's can get in. this year, uci was really lenient also. i was surprise some people made it in =/. but uci is a bit harder on admission rate...cause its tougher. so i guess its better?

oh... near SF. about 30-45 minutes away. but yeah it takes me like 5-7 hours to get to LA and then 30 minutes without traffic to get to UCI.

Another question... does anyone know if we are suppose to take a survey for the housing? because i signed my housing but there was no housing survey for a roommate, so am i just gonna get a random person?

^Yea, you didn't have to fill out a survey. My friend said you're just supposed to turn in the application and they'll mail you some stuff later and you fill out your survey and request which housing you want and stuff.

I'm going to Irvine from norcal too :)

I was in a similar situation last year when I was deciding between UCSB, UCI and Cal Poly SLO.

I ended up choosing Irvine, because Cal Poly was fifteen minutes from home and I wanted to be more independent and away from home, Santa Barbara was still too close to home and it didn't appeal to me, but Irvine had my major and I really liked the environment. So, here I am a year later and I don't regret my decision...For now at least =)

Are you going to SPOP? I highly recommend it.

basically what he said just cuz you go to party school doesnt mean that your gunna end up like all the hardcore party goers its really who you associate with as for house parties there are TONS of em in irvine as well and irvine being diverse? i dunno they are mostly asians -__- irvine isnt near LA pending traffic but there are lots of stuff to do in irvine when the POLICE arent bothering you. if i were you thought i would go based on your major not where your friends or your parents want you to go cuz its YOUR future not theirs...just my 2 cents

depends on your major for my situation i got into ucla and cal poly but my major is hospitality (hotel and restaurant management). ucla is the obvious choice of school to go to BUT they dont even have that major so obviously i chose to go to cal poly my parents were pissed at first but then i showed em wsup when they finally realized that it just aint about what school you go to its where you go based on your major

SPOP is the Student Parent Orientation Program and you can choose between the 3 day program or the 1 day program.
