heyy ^.^ i jus graduated from high school and goin to attend a CC in the fall. i was jus wondering if anyone had gone to a community college for 2 years, then transferred to a foreign school. cuz i want to transfer to a university in japan but im not exactly sure how that would work...so if anyone knows someone ^.^

I have the same exact question (except I'm a Soph in a CC atm). I wish someone had the answer. T__T;

I've been emailing the university I want to transfer to (University of Calgary), but so far, no reply. I've also talked to my advisor and he has no freaking clue because everyone around here all transfer to UGA or GA Tech.. and no where else, really. sleep.gif; I've talked to department heads and even the Study Abroad coordinator. mellow.gif She didn't know anything about this because students here just study for a semester (in China, Italy, Germany, etc.. never in Canada) and I want to go ahead and get my Bachelor's degree at UofC after I get my Associates here. u_u;

i'll do some research when i have time... finals this week for me...

BUT! DON'T GET YOUR ASSOCIATES JUST YET! ... you can always get ur associates degree after u transfer. you can even get it after you get your Bachelors. Prioritize around transferring and you will just have to take few more classes to get ur AA degree. (unless your thinking about a job that requires a AA degree? *shrugs*)

hi.. i'm a freshman and i'm gonna be going to Fullerton College in the fall... but i wasn't sure whether or not i should take honor classes. are the honor classes much more difficult than the regular classes?? is it better to get A's in regular classes than to get B's in honors? i remember my high school counselor telling me that it is... so i was wondering if it's the same for college too...
i want to take honor classes... but i'm not so sure i'll do great...

right now... my counselor advised me to take the following classes... but i received a letter regarding the honors program couple weeks ago... unsure.gif i don't know what to do..

english 100F 3 units
econ 101F 3 units
CIS 111F 3 units
math 150AF 4 units
music 119F 3 units

next time please write out your course TITLES. (we dont go to same school so numbers are different)

I'm guessing honors program = my schools scholars classes...
I took 1 scholars class (microeconomics) ... i really liked the professor and class wasn't half bad. I ended up getting a B.
your cc will have a office for scholars/honors program most likely. Completing the honors/scholars program is a guaranteed admission to a UC.
I've known people who did the scholars program. If you are on top of your game, go for it.

btw why a CIS class? whats ur major?

You can get your Associates AFTER your Bachelors? Lol wow, I never knew that. ^^; But from what I've been told from department heads is that if you obtain your Associates first, whatever institution you want to transfer to will HAVE to accept all your credits; whereas, if you still had a couple of classes to take, they can basically pick and choose which credits are transferrable. Mm.. any insight on this? =) Thanks for helping everyone, by the way. tongue.gif

i have no clue about the credits being chosen and such.
but do you know about the GE BREATH and IGETC? if you complete those program, u only need around 1-3 (maybe couple more) classes to get your AA degree. the reason why i say prioritize around transferring is because you don't want to stay an extra semester or two, just because you took those 1-3 classes that u need for your AA and not have enough required classes for transferring.

from experience (my sister): she transferred and during summer of her junior year -> senior year, she took those extra classes to get her AA degree.

Okay, I'll be a "junior" this fall at UCI coming from OCC. I was also accepted into UCLA and UCSD under biological sciences.
As a bio major, I had some issues with the community college system (namely the coastline system) but I guess it can work with you depending on what your major is.

BUT it doesn't work well if you have a demanding major like bio that has a huuuuuge requirement list for classes. So with that in mind, here is my advice for future bio majors going to a community college (these were all from my own mistakes -____-wink.gif

1. Talk to counselors:
Why? First off, if you're an AP student, you need to know which classes can be eliminated. Because Biological Sciences majors have so many classes they need to get done to get their BS, time is of the essence. If you don't take the proper classes, you'll be behind forever. AND MAKE SURE YOU'RE TALKING TO A GOOD COUNSELOR. Find out if there are any placement tests or anything you should take to get out of certain classes. Take classes that will satisfy your GEs AND your major courses.

2. Know that if you fall behind, you'll probably be staying another year at where ever you are transferring to. -_____-; This is so lame. I got behind with one class.. ONE and it just so happened that that dragged me so far behind that I'll need to stay another year to finish my upper division courses. UCs (most of them?) go by a quarter system while the Coastline Community College system goes by SEMESTER. That means for every class you get done, the UC people finish TWO. While some of the classes are in longer sets than at the Coastline Community Colleges, overall they are the ones who will complete everything more quickly. Also, there are classes you must take that are only offered at UCs that will allow you access to upper division courses that you cannot take until you either transfer or decide to take over the summer.

3. Take summer school.
Again, you don't want to get behind. Seriously. What's the point of going to a community college if you still have to pay 75% of what you would've paid if you had just gone straight to a UC? If you add together the two years (assuming it's two years you've spent at the community college) worth of classes and admission and whatever, I'm sure you'd be getting kind of close to 80% of what you would've paid to go to a UC anyways.

4. Petition:
What's petitioning o_O? It's going the first day to a class and asking to be apart of that class even though it's closed. aahaa, I had no idea you could do this o_O (sadly) but now you know! so do it!!! biggrin.gif

And that's all the advice I have to give... if you're a bio major or go to OCC, PM me if you have questions! :]

depends on college. go talk to a counselor.

ie: cal states accept applications basically anytime. uc's on the other hand dont.

i know that when you drop a class with a "W" it means that for your transcript they'll put "W" next to the course to indicate that you have withdrawn from that class.

but what does withdrawal indicate? is it better to withdraw or get a bad grade? cause my summer class teacher is really unfair and no matter how hard i worked she kept dropping C's and D's on me...so i was thinking of withdrawing that class but i was afraid that it'll look bad on my transcript. ;;; so can someone clarify what it means to "withdraw?" thanks =)

withdrawal indicates that maybe you werent ready for the class? its better than failing a class though. and also... summer classes are intense because its only like 6 week long (well thats the case for me). i've withdrawed when i took chem and it was too much for a 6 week class. also my friends dad who works at a community college said that college do look at the w's and if u dont have too many, thats fine. also they also see the term u received the w at. they dont really frown upon u dropping a 6 week class.

classes offered in honors program is VERY limited. go visit your schools honors program and such to get more info. 3 of the 5 classes (freshman english, microecon, i think calc 1) are offered as a honors program. it would suck to have limit more classes from the honors program. my advice: go see your schools honors program office.

thank you for clarifying that =)
i did some calculation and found that i'll prolly end up w/ a B in that class...which isn't low enough for me to withdraw yet...
darnit haha i was hoping i could drop this hell of a class sleep.gif

Yay thank jesus for this thread I'm so close to college and I still haven't really decided what to do.

Going to school in California is something I have always dreamed of. I really REALLY want to go to UCI. I'm in the process of submitting my application right now, I still need to write my personal statement. I'm confident I will get in, maybe? But then theres another bridge to cross. I cant afford it, there is just no way.

So I've been thinking about CC's ever since reading this thread. Going to a community college has never crossed my mind before because i've always been taught by my parents that community colleges were for people who weren't good enough to go to a real college. Honestly it doesn't matter to me, if you transfer to a UC from a CC it's not like it says that on your degree.

Anyhow, i just had a few questions. First of all I don't really understand this cost per unit thing. How many units do you have exactly? What can i expect for the cost of community college in all? Also, can anyone recommend a good CC near the Irvine/Anaheim area?

Another important thing is that I'm from out of state. Washington to be exact...does that interfere in any way of me attending a California CC? And over here the top 15% of our high school get into community college for free. Would I get those same benefits even though i'm from another state?

^cost per unit means... for example if the CC you're going to is $20 per unit.
if you choose to enroll in a class that is 3 units that means it will cost $60 for that one class.

besides the cost of classes, there are the costs of textbooks (roughly $100 per class, math courses would be more expensive. for example if you take 3 classes it would cost at least $300 or more for books. unless you take a class that uses a teeny tiny paperback book)

there is the cost of commuting, since most ppl who go to CC live at home, you would have to drive to school and the cost of gas, or maybe you'll take the bus etc.

i dont think being out of state has anything to affect your chances of attending a CA CC.
mainly because anyone who applies to a CC get in.

going to a university in Japan is extremely difficult.

all universities in Japan have their OWN entrance exams.
which you must pass as the first "screening"
you have to have good enough grades.
then you have to write an essay in Japanese and or have an interview as the second screening.
you must also be aware that the school year in japan starts in april

besides that you would also have to have a student visa ready once you get accepted.

you need to be fluent in Japanese.
since all the classes and textbooks are taught in Japanese (besides foreign language classes)
theres no way you could even survive without being fluent.

the best way to figure it all out is going to the exact University's website.
they do have their websites in english however the guide books, applications are in japanese.
each school has a different policy so if you're interested in a particular school you should look it up to find out more.

^seriously.

i have a question to some of the soompiers. anyone here going to a cc planning on transferring to a private university?
cause my goal is to go to usc. and unfortunately, since usc doesn't accept igetc, i have to take classes according to usc's requirement.
i'm scared that, after all the classes i take for usc, i don't get in- what am i gonna do?
uc/csu's accept igetc so it's easier if you don't get in one school, but get in another school.
that means that i might have to stay at the cc for another year, taking classes to fulfill uc/csu's requirement classes right?

gad, this sucks

=/ anyone know of any good fashion schools? / transfer reqs. from cc to wherever else for fashion? eh, sorry if this whle thing doesnt make sense sleep.gif;

it really depends.
my friend went to UCSB and decided it wasnt for her and transferred to FIDM (although she wasnt a fashion major)
FIDM is a trade school, and a respectable fashion institute.
if you know you wanna do fashion for sure, why not go to FIDM? (that is if you wanna stay in state)
its a year round school, so you finish in two years.

so you save more money compared to going to a 4 yr university.
btw as a fashion major you have to take a lot of fashion related courses, which probably wont satisfy your GE requirements for UCs and private schools.
meaning if you're unsure of your major, it'd be safer to take fashion courses as well as typical GE courses (math, english, science etc)

how are you starting sept. 4th? are those short term classes or something?
good luck with school!
UCLA has a transfer program called TAP, why don't you look it up?

try to figure out your major asap, so that you can figure out your major prereqs for the school you want to transfer to
that way you can map out your classes, and be on track to transfer within 2 years
freshman grades count, so try to do as well as you can!
