Hey guys Fall 08 apps are approaching sweatingbullets.gif and I would like to ask a few questions to those that have transferred to UC's in particular.

This is my first year at a CC and my current GPA is ~3.8x (I forget and the online transcripts are down currently) with 32 units completed, and I will be applying to UCI, UCSD, UCLA, and UCB. [1] I assume that I need 60 units and IGETC completed by the end of the spring semester (rather than 60 units by the time of app) is this correct? [2] By the end of spring I will probably have just about 60-62 depending on what I choose for the next semester, however I've heard of people transferring with 70+ units, is that what it takes to get in? [3] And my final question I've taken AP courses in high school and I will probably be using them for my total units in transfer, did anyone else do the same? How did this work out for you?

Thanks for your time and help. I've been asking around all over school but sometimes the answers I get don't really answer my questions. I'm hoping that people with experience crazy.gif will be able to help. Thanks again wink.gif

Well you need at least 60 units to transfer. and if you taking summer it counts too. And yes, most of the stats, it show stats that most accpeted applicants have average of 105 quarter units (~70semester units) Since it's average, i don't think it's necessarily but the more transfer creidts you have, i get better chances b/c they will think that you can graduate faster. about hte Ap classes i think you are suppose to ask your college counselors to approve them and give you the college credits.

i'm applying to transfer this semester... any words of encouragement? =[

Hey man, I don't have any advice for what you asked, but I do have words of encouragement! Stay strong, and keep your eyes on the prize. From what I can tell, you're a very intellectual person, and I do believe that all of your hardwork will pay off. Good luck!!! :]

i'm taking the SAT on december coz my first choice school requires SAT for transfer applicants w/ less than 45 credits upon application.

Now, my question is, i'll be applying to 4 schools, and only one school requires my SAT scores. Should i also send my SAT scores to those schools that don't require them?? coz i'm afraid that for example, i didn't do good in my SAT, then the school who doesn't require my SAT scores saw them since i sent it to them anyways, and my low scores might lower down my chances of acceptance.

If your school doesn't require SATS for transfer (which most shouldn't), then I don't think it's necessary to send it to them. Good luck!

okay.. thanks.. so do collegeboard allow if i only fill up one school for my scores to be sent to?

also, coz idk if i'm going to pursue to apply for transfer in the Fall 08 or Fall 09, but i'll be preparing my requirements for the deadline for the Fall 08. If the requirement that i've been waiting for arrive before the deadline of the schools for Fall 08, i'll be applying, but if not i'll postpone it for Fall 09.

my question is, for example, i already asked my high school overseas to send out my official transcript to the university i'm applying to in preparation for the Fall 08, but last minute decided to just go for Fall 09, would i still have to resend my hs transcript, although i already sent out one before?? this also goes to recommendation letters, sat scores, etc...

Sorry if my case is confusing.

yes you'll have to resend everything. so basically what's going to happen is that rather than applying now, you'll have to reapply for fall '09. so if you apply now, you'll be admitted for fall '08. then in december of '08 you'll apply for fall '09. because there are thousands of applicants each year, the schools that you've already sent your sat scores and such to won't be saved. your hs transcript, recommendations and sat scores will have to be resent again. since the professors/teachers won't be able to write another recommendation again, you should probably have them pull out the same file, date it for the following year, seal it in the back, sign or stamp their name and then keep it along with everything else. you'll have to request your transcript not from your school, but from the school board to send your hs transcript. once you have graduated from that hs, they are no longer responsible for sending out your transcript. it'll then be your responsibility to ask the school board to send it to your respective schools; same goes for sat scores.

Those are great tips in post ten. I've only spoken with advisors once or twice and both times they were really helpful and nice. My only advice is to pace yourself with your time and don't over load yourself if you think you can't handle it. I did that my first term and I had a mini freak out towards the end. Time management is definitley important.

Oh yea. I was looking at the local university's program for my major and they have some classes that are the same as the one at my cc. I think going to a CC is good for getting started on your major's and cheaper. It's also good to do a lot of your major stuff out of the way like your math, science, history etc.

It definitely depends on the professors, but from my experience the coursework is essentially the same (so say my professors who also teach at public & private universities). I've noticed that I learn the same things some of my friends do, and in just as much detail. I'm sure it'll also depend on which CC you go to as well. Some have programs that definitely tend to be more challenging to weed people out.

i'm here again... i always come up with questions... happy.gif

about residencies.. for example, i'm going to this certain university in my state, then in the middle of the year, my parents decided to move out to a different state, but i'll still be attending that same school. would i be considered as an out of state already?

also, does all the universities in the us have residency rules?? like you must live in this state within this span of year to be able to be considered as an in state student.

thanks smile.gif

I live on the east coast, but I hope to get into one of the UC's. The only problem is that I have no family in California and I would basically have to pay everything myself. Would it be worthwhile (and I know much cheaper) to go directly to community college in California and then transfer? If I did transfer would I have to live in California for at least two years to gain the in-state tuition benefits? Or should I just drop the idea of going to a college on the other side of the US and stick to the east coast >.>
Thanks~

yea you can go to cc in cali for 2 years (pay out of state tuition for cc) then transfer to a uc and pay instate tuition. i think 2 years is required for instate tuition.

no. coz right now, my parents are deciding to move to a different state, probably in Florida or Cali. they are still in the planning process, and i'm not sure if they'll be pushing for it. I'm in a cc right now and is planning to transfer to a univ here in my state too. My dad told me to probably just finish my education here before i follow them if ever they'll move out.

so, does that mean that if they go to Cali/ Florida, and i stay and dorm in my school, i'll still be considered in state, right? coz my parents are the once who are financing my education, so idk if that affects me somehow?????? i'm really sorry coz i'm just totally confused mellow.gif
